Job Description
Wet Pants Sailing Association seeks applications for Optimist and 420 Race Coaches (as well as a Head Instructor and Sailing Instructors) for the summer 2020 season, running late June to mid August. Our fun learn-to-sail programs teach students (ages 8 through adult) with beginner to advanced skill levels to become safe independent recreational or competitive racing sailors. Good coaching and a passion for sailing is fundamental to success!

A community based sailing organization since 1934, we are located in Sayville on the Great South Bay on Long Island, New York's south shore. We have 2 international and 1 regional airport nearby, buses and trains, farms, vineyards, beaches, shopping and close proximity to New York City.

Job Requirements
420 & OPTIMIST RACE COACHES: Approx. 35-55 hours / week. Salary commensurate with experience. These are full-time, 8-week position beginning June 22, 2020. Reporting to our Head Instructor, Wet Pants Race Coaches are experienced & safety conscious providing exceptional classroom and on the water instruction, tuning and performance enhancement guidance, racing rules and good sportsmanship to race students ages 10-17 sailing Opti/Optimist, 420 (and Sunfish). This full-time, 8-week position for a 7-week program requires local travel to regattas, occasional evening social events & informal club races. We do host a Junior Regatta through GSBYRA and a sharing/sailing day of friendship with developmentally disabled students among other activities.

In addition to our General Requirements listed below, please also have:
Minimum 6 years experience teaching sailing, with references
Minimum 2 years in a race coach capacity with students finishing in top 10
Complete knowledge of racing rules
Extensive personal experience and racing record with Optimists/Optis and 420s
Please include your personal race finishes and your students

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL CANDIDATES
Safe use and experience with Optimist (Opti/Dinghy) and or 420 (Sunfish, Mercury, Flying Scot experience helpful)
Safe use and experience with 14-19’ power boats
Personal racing experience with solid knowledge of weather/sailing conditions
Oversee proper maintenance and storage of boats, gear and tools
Provide strong positive leadership, creativity and demonstrate a passion for sailing
Have excellent proper knowledge of terminology, rigging, docking, troubleshooting techniques etc
Have excellent and respectful communication and instruction style
Convey feedback to students and parents in a positive, constructive manner
Self motivated to create and teach enriching land and water lessons, engaging students
Preplan min. of 8-hrs of foul-weather activities on appropriate sailing topics for different age levels
Available days and some evenings to accommodate classes offered, regattas and club events
Must be able to operate electric boat lift to lift and lower Mercurys and Flying Scots daily
Able to lift, drain and put Optis & 420’s on dolly, pull up beach or load onto stacking trailers
Strong swimmer, tolerant of sun and salt water
Conduct daily cleaning and organization of buildings, restrooms, sail shed, yard & beach
Have current US Sailing Membership
Have completed USOC Safesport Training
Have current CPR and first aid training
Hold a minimum of a US Sailing Level 1 certificate valid through Aug. 31, 2020 or international equivalent, or a valid USCG Masters License with Sail Endorsement

SAILING INSTRUCTORS: Approx. 30-40 hours / week for 7-week program. Hourly rate. Reporting to our Head Instructor, Wet Pants instructors teach and motivate children and adults beginner to advanced sailing skills/techniques.
