Job Description
Position Summary
The Adult Programs Specialist helps New England Science & Sailing (NESS) achieve its mission of building brighter futures through ocean adventure education. This position will create curriculum, develop and implement programs, and nurture relationships with customers and partners. This is a great opportunity for a passionate, motivated individual with a strong background in sailing and powerboating to be an integral part of this vibrant, growing organization. Adult programs include sailing, powerboating and adventure sports education both on and off the water. You must be motivated and able to work within a team as well as on your own. This full-time, year-round position reports to the NESS Sailing Program Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Adult Sailing Programs; The Adult Programs Specialist is primarily responsible for developing, maintaining, and teaching NESS’s adult sailing programs. Specific program goals include but are not limited to the following:
• Teach Learn to Sail and Intermediate programs on Sonars
• Develop a social league
• Develop new innovative offerings
• Provide keelboat training for NESS staff and AmeriCorps Members

Powerboat Programs; NESS has a growing powerboat program which offers courses that incorporate and follow the US Powerboating curriculum. The Adult Programs Specialist will coordinate and teach all aspects of NESS’s powerboat program. These responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Function as lead instructor for all US Powerboating safe powerboating classes
• Develop other powerboating opportunities to help grow the program
• Work with Program Directors on school based powerboat programs
• Provide powerboat training for NESS staff and AmeriCorps Members

Seasonal Adult Adventure Sports Programs; NESS is broadening its adult opportunities within the community to include but not be limited to SUP, SUP Yoga, Kayak, and Marine Science programming. The Adult Programs Specialist will
• Plan, implement and schedule all adult programs
• Hire additional staff as needed to support these programs
• Organize and implement programs with the Evening/Weekend Coordinator

Operations; Provide assistance and support NESS’s Operations Director by completing minor maintenance duties on NESS equipment and fleet that will be required on a can-do basis.
• Coordinate with NESS’s operations director on maintaining and repairing equipment
• Oversee NESS’s fleet of Keelboats (Sonars/J-105/Independence 20)
• In conjunction with NESS’s Safety Coordinator ensure that all safety equipment on NESS vessels is kept current

Expected Work Schedule:
• Flexible seasonal (April – November) work schedule with a strong presence on weekends and some evening hours
• Regular (December – March) Monday through Friday work schedule
Job Requirements
Requirements:
Education/Certifications (certain certifications can be obtained through NESS)
o 4-year college degree, preferred
o US Sailing Level 2/Level 3, preferred
o ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding (may be obtained through NESS)
o USCG OUPV 6-pack License or greater (may be obtained through NESS)
o Keelboat instruction certification
o Kayak instructor certification
o Valid Driver’s License & your own transportation

Skills/Knowledge/Experience
o Strong program and staff management skills
o Strong background in sailing that includes basic keelboat instruction
o Minimum 2 years of sailing program management including head instructor duties
o Minimum of 2 years of collegiate or Olympic development sailing
o Effective skills in written and verbal communications, problem solving, decision making, group dynamics, public speaking, and task organization
o Strong team player and excellent motivator
o Ability to forge effective working relationships with NESS program staff, operations staff, administrative staff, directors, volunteers, students and parents
o Working knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
