Job Description
DIRECT THE CAMPUS RECREATION SAILING AND BOATING PROGRAM
Develop and administer the Campus Recreation Sailing Program that includes instruction in dinghies and keel boats, rental of boats and paddle boards, youth camps and after school programs, and sailing special events. This includes development of all curriculum, testing, and instructional materials; schedule classes; set fees; participant pre-requisites, and develop new classes and programs that meet the needs of the campus and city. Train and supervise all instructional staff. Oversee contracts and joint programs with the City of Newport Beach for year round sailing and paddling. Includes facility and equipment maintenance and purchases. Establish relationships with other city and harbor entities and continue to explore additional opportunities for collaboration for boating programs. Manage all boating staff, including maintenance, program and camp staff.

Oversee grants through the Department of Boating and Waterways including completing required obligations of current grant.

DIRECT, ANALYZE AND MANAGE THE SAILING AND BOATING PROGRAM BUDGETS
Creatively develop new methods of increasing income and reducing expenditures where needed to maintain program quality and viability. Initiate opportunities for additional funding sources including grants with Department of Boating and Waterways and other agencies.

OVERSEE/ADMINISTER UCI SAILING EQUIPMENT AND BOATING EQUIPMENT
Manage the UCI Sailing and boating fleet including, overseeing the maintenance and management of all boats and equipment, review Risk Management issues involving boating activities. Develop policies and procedures for safe and cost effective use of equipment for sailing program vessels, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks. Research and manage replacement for all boats and equipment. Research and determine equipment needed for program growth.

Other duties as assigned including but not limited to assisting the Campus Recreation program, and representing the Department or University at meetings and functions.
Job Requirements
Required:
BA/BS in Physical Education, Recreation or related field with 2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Strong sailing and boating skills.
Demonstrated successful experience with dinghy, keelboat, small powerboats, kayaks and stand up paddleboards. Thorough knowledge of safety and liability considerations related to operation of a sports and activity program in boating environment and the ability to adapt programs as needed.
Knowledge and skill in the nature of boating instruction and activities including safety, personnel,and programs. Experience teaching sailing and other boating programs in a structured program.
Demonstrated ability to select and administer safe activities that meet departmental objectives.
Demonstrated understanding of risk management policies and procedures.
Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Demonstrated ability to make informative presentations to a variety of groups.
Ability to write grants and successfully maintain the current Boating Safety grant.
Knowledge of boat maintenance, repairs, and all related equipment.
Demonstrated successful experience managing budgets including the ability to maximize program profits and develop creative means to add new program funding.
Effective interpersonal skills to interact with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, peers, and the community.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills to effectively interact with people from a variety of ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
Ability to interpret university, department and city policies and procedures with regard to utilization of staffing and programming.
Skill in working independently to develop program objectives and methodology in attaining those objectives.
Skill in mediating conflicts, protests and disputes related to recreation programs.
Proficiency in standard computer skills. Recognized CPR/1st Aid/AED certification.

Desired:
Master's degree in Physical Education, Recreation or related field and two years of related experience, or equivalent level of education/experience.
Competitive sailing experience.
Successful experience working with community organizations and developing joint programs or events with non-campus agencies.
United States Sailing Association Instructor certification or comparable professional boating certification.
