Job Description
GORGE Junior Sailing, located on the Columbia River in Hood River, Oregon is seeking a Director for the 2018 summer season. Founded in 2005, GJS is a nonprofit 501c3 seasonal summer program. Approximately 165 children & adults enroll in our beginning to advanced sailing classes in Optis, O’Pen Bics, & C420s.

We are seeking experienced, responsible, and enthusiastic applicants who enjoy teaching the sport of sailing. The Director will work under the oversight of the GORGE Junior Sailing Board of Directors.

Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the sailing program.
- Supervise and collaborate with sailing instructors.
- Conduct staff training.
- Team-building.
- Communicate with parents.
- Pre and post season boat setup & pack up.
- Sailboat maintenance, rigging, & repairs. (fiberglass repair skills a plus)
- Basic powerboat upkeep for 2 RIBs
- Record keeping, evaluating students, curriculum.
- Handling discipline issues in a respectful and appropriate manner.
- Ensuring on & off water safety for students & instructors.
- Organize sailing equipment and instructional materials.
- Responsibilities require that the Director be on site or within a close distance during all sailing classes and activities related to GJS unless otherwise approved by the board.

Employment will be from mid June to end of August (exact start/end dates are flexible). Must be available for boat set-up, 8 weeks of classes (class dates: July 2-Aug 24), and postseason cleanup. Instruction takes place weekdays from 8:30am-5pm, with some evening adult classes. Every Monday evening is community open sailing.

Hours: Approx 30-40 hrs per week, Mon-Fri. Monday evenings. Possibility of teaching Tue/Thur evening Adult class.

If needed, housing accommodations can be arranged for qualified applicants.

Pay is competitive based on experience. The Director’s responsibilities will be mostly shore based, however opportunities to teach advanced 420 classes, adult sailing classes, and private lessons are available.

Location Details:
Hood River is about an hour east of Portland. The Gorge is full of fun outdoor opportunities! Top-notch kiteboarding & windsurfing! Mountain biking, fishing, hiking, rafting, kayaking, and sailing! Every Wednesday evening is keelboat racing through the Hood River Yacht Club. CGRA, which hosts national level regattas every summer is just 20 minutes away- if you plan to attend 2018 CGRA regattas, we might be able to accommodate your regatta schedule.

Job Requirements
Job Qualifications:
- Current US Sailing Level 1 Certification required.
- Current First Aid and Adult/Child CPR certificates.
- Boater Education Card. (Can obtain this after hire.)
- At least 5 years sailing instructing experience.
- At least one year in a leadership role managing staff (director, head instructor, etc).
- Experience developing and implementing curriculum, preferred.
- Must have experience and be comfortable performing on-the-water rescues in high wind environment.
- Background in youth or collegiate sailing programs.

- Support and collaborate with instructors to run fun and safe classes that include effective instruction, drills, and activities, both on and off the water.

- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with instructors, board members, and the public.
- Effective communication skills, verbally and written.
- Ability to teach advanced 420 sailing, including trapeze and spinnaker techniques.
