The Newport Sea Base is seeking a Head Coach and Sailing Coordinator to oversee existing instructional and racing programs for nearly 700 youth annually, ages 7 to 18, which includes a Jr. Sailing Team, Learn to Sail program, Adventure Sailing Club, and a youth keelboat program. This position also helps develop and implement new programs in conjunction with the Program Director. The position requires the candidate to be the Head Coach for the junior sailing program, as well as other coaching responsibilities during the school year. There are major responsibilities for customer service, public relations, curriculum development, staff/instructor development, and class/activity scheduling. Ensures that Newport Sea Base programs meet the highest health and safety standards. Must be at least 21 years old, and have CPR and First Aid; and Red Cross Lifeguard certification upon being hired. US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor certificate is required, and US Sailing Small Boat Level 2 Coach and/or US Sailing Big Boat Instructor recommended. Needs to be enthusiastic, patient, and creative. Enforce National BSA policies, all state and local boating safety laws, and environmental regulations, as applicable. Reports directly to the Program Director.
•Directs the sailing program through part-time and seasonal sailing instructors. Programs include introductory classes, junior race team, afterschool enrichment, keelboat sailing, and more.
•Lead maintenance projects on the sailing fleet, which has 12 RS Teras, 7 RS Fevas, 12 CFJs, 2 Harbor 20s, 4 Olson 30s, Columbia 30 sportboat, and an IMX 38, to ensure that boats are operational for classes.
•Responsible for training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating the sailing staff. May personally instruct various classes, in addition.
•Assists Program Director in promoting job openings for instructors when needed; help conduct interviews with Program Director. Ensure staff roster is filled with multiple instructors to teach every class throughout the year.
•Regularly observes programs for quality assurance and safety of operations using Program Site Assessment Form to be reviewed with Program Director bi-weekly.
•Effectively supports programs in all aspects related to employee performance, communication, and operations management.
•Creates curriculum/lesson plans that are exciting and mission-focused in order to expand usage of the facility, increase number of youth participating in program, and increase revenue. Develop curriculum that is fun, varied, and involve youth of various ages. Communicates thoroughly any proposed program changes.
•Regularly evaluates the personal aptitudes and effectiveness of the sailing staff consistent with the standards of the OCBSA Outdoor Adventures Group. Be a positive role model and a strong leader.
•Regularly observe programs for quality and safety control of operations.
•Oversee student-discipline procedures and be responsible for written tracking of such.
•Be responsible for program supply inventory, request supplies with proper lead time for ordering, and manage expenses to stay within budget. All expenses must be approved in advance.
•Ensure proper set-up, usage, and clean-up of the facility, equipment, and docks.
•Creates annual, quantifiable programmatic and professional goals to be reviewed quarterly with Program Director, and meets program and revenue objectives.
