This fulltime, year-round Head Coach & Program Assistant position is a supervisory opportunity in the Community Sailing and Basin Program areas of the Parks & Recreation Department. Responsibilities include coaching a nationally recognized race program, implementing seasonal youth and adult programs as well as equipment maintenance. The position is also responsible for the management of the boat launch basin, sailing compound and coordination of all seasonal sailing and basin staff.
The successful applicant will have high level racing experience personally as well as demonstrated proven leadership abilities as a Coach at a robust sailing program. Must be positive, organized and enjoy working with youth and adults. Must have excellent customer service and communication skills as well as basic computer skills. Must be able to work day, evening and weekend hours. A working knowledge of fiberglass, outboard engines and rigging systems maintenance is a must.
The Sailing Program utilizes a fleet of 420s, Vanguard prams, Avon hard-bottom inflatables, a Colgate 26, and is supplemented by a fleet of privately owned Optimists and Lasers. Program instruction reaches more than 460 students each year. We have a 420/Laser Racing Team and an Optimist Racing Team that travel nationally to compete in top junior events throughout the year. We host high school racing teams and one college team in the spring and fall seasons. The City’s Sailing Program is one of the premier community sailing programs in the country and is accredited by U.S. Sailing. We require a Head Coach/Program Assistant who has the same vision and determination to continue the success of our program.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree, at least 1 year experience in teaching/coaching sailing and be U.S. Sailing Level I certified or equivalent. Prefer that the Head Coach/Sailing Assistant to be a Level II Small Boat Instructor, Level I/II Instructor Trainer, and have advanced levels of Keelboat Training or have the ability to obtain such certifications.
