Job Description: Mate duties include, but are not limited to: instructing and overseeing staff & students in proper vessel operation, presenting nautical science topics both in the classroom and on the vessel, and teaching a variety of sailing + navigation classes while underway. The Mate directly supports the Captain and works as a team with the Captain and Deckhand in order to ensure a safe environment on the vessel and to address any maintenance of the vessel that is necessary. Trips range from 3 to 5 day expeditions as well as day sails with students to short 2-4 hour promotional sails and transits of the vessel with other crewmembers. In the evening the Mate remains aboard as a member of the sail crew to assist with any necessary vessel needs as well as helping students with chores aboard, writing a report of their day, cooking, and other evening activities. Office duties for the Mate may include assisting in food and supply packing, preparing paperwork for expeditions, assisting with classroom sessions, program development as necessary & and other tasks as assigned. The Mate works as one member of a 6 person team, & participates in all shipboard duties including: vessel operations, line handling, docking, cleaning, etc.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
o 50 ton Inland Mates license (or greater) with sail endorsement
o Experience teaching sailing and navigation
o Demonstrated ability to handle and maintain a vessel as well as safely manage the deck
o Demonstrated ability to instruct staff and students in proper vessel operation to ensure safety
o Experience with small boats + outboard engines
o Ability to be an effective leader when necessary, as well as team member within sailing team
o Experience working with 10-16 year olds
o Current first aid/CPR.
o Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all types of weather
o Ability to lift an carry gear up to 50lbs
o Ability to work well both individually and as a team member, as well as independently with small groups of students
o Ability to stay positive when working with cre& students over multiple days in relatively confined spaces of the vessel
o Proactive work ethic: willingness to help in any aspects of programming necessary
o Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug test
