Job Description
Pleon Yacht Club (PYC), the oldest junior yacht club in the world, is seeking a full time Program Director to begin work this fall. The Program Director is responsible for all aspects of our sailing programs: a full-time eight week summer sailing program, Spring and Fall racing clinics for Optis and 420s, and spring sailing programs for high school teams berthed at PYC.

The Program Director reports to a Board of Directors and will directly supervise the coaches and junior instructors. The Director will be responsible for hiring and training staff (coaches and junior instructors), overseeing maintenance of boats and facility, marketing program offerings, managing club safety and communications, and coordinating regatta logistics in conjunction with fleet parents. The Program Director will work closely with Board of Directors on fundraising initiatives. Pleon Yacht Club is also the host of Marblehead Junior Race Week (MJRW) held each July. The Program Director is responsible for running the operations of MJRW in conjunction with the race committees and volunteer committees.

Pleon is a unique organization in that its flag officers and members are all youths ages 8 to 20. Since its beginning in 1887, Pleon’s mission has been to involve as many young people in the sport of sailing as possible. The program supports both serious competitors and recreational sailors of all skill levels.

Summer Season Responsibilities
The summer sailing season is the core of Pleon’s program. Pleon is home just under 200 youth members with interests ranging from learn to sail, racing programs and recreational keelboat programs. Instruction is offered in Optis, Lasers, 420s and Sonars. Program Director responsibilities include:

• Work with Program Committee over winter months to plan summer program, hire coaching staff, create program brochures and manage sailor registration
• Communicate with prospective families and speak at Pleon information sessions
• Manage staff of coaches and junior instructors throughout summer program
• Manage safety (monitor weather, communicate to coaches)
• Coordinate coach travel and regatta logistics for race classes (work in conjunction with race team parents)
• Ensure club boats are kept in working order (Optis, Lasers, 420s, Sonars) to include fiberglass repair, rig modifications, etc…
• Maintain a fleet of trailers for coach boats

Shoulder Season Responsibilities
The shoulder season sailing is a relatively new and growing component of Pleon Yacht Club. We have Opti and 420 racing clinics, as well as a high school sailing program for Marblehead High School and a couple of visiting high schools. Program Director responsibilities include:

• Develop program offering and dates, review budget
• Identify, evaluate and select new coach and assistant coach hires
• Coordinate coaches, assistant coaches, operating and logistical needs during clinic days
• Broadcast and market program offerings (NESSA, Pleon email lists, etc)
• Communicate with prospective sailors and parents about programs
• Manage registration for clinics (Optis and 420s), communicate fall and spring season regatta opportunities
• Lead all aspects of safety, ensure coaches take appropriate safety measures and be present to lead safety measures for fall/spring sailing
• Develop growth plan for shoulder season sailing opportunities
• Help coaches manage equipment use, both facility and coach boats
• Host end of fall season barbecue and club championship regatta

The Program Director is a full time position June through August. For the months September through May, the job is approximately 15-20 hours per week.
