Job Description
The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) community oriented sailing organization, seeking a Sailing Program Director for the 2019 summer season, early June through mid-August. Havre de Grace, MD is a beautiful waterfront town located where the Susquehanna River merges into the upper Chesapeake Bay.

This is the third full season of the youth sailing program, offering basic and competitive dinghy sailing instruction to youth ages 7-18. The fleet comprises Optimists, Lasers, 420s, and Hunter Xcites. The Sailing Program Director is responsible to supervise the sailing instruction staff and to teach our students fundamental sailing skills, and to promote safety, self-reliance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and environmental responsibility. The program also has an emphasis on “Adventure Sailing”, given the many fun and interesting places that are within our sailing area. Our goal is to instill a long-term love of sailing in our students.
Responsibilities include:
• Sailing Instruction for approximately 25 students per day
• Supervise the sailing instructors and perform daily administrative duties
• Initiate a racing training program, although it is expected that there will be only a few students initially participating in local racing
• Ensure a safe, organized and educational maritime experience
• Upkeep of boats, equipment, and facilities
• Other responsibilities considered necessary to running a good sailing school

Job Requirements and Experience:
• US Sailing Small Boat Level 1
• First Aid and CPR/AED certification
• American Lifeguard Certificate, or equivalent (may be obtained locally)
• At least two years of college
• Maryland Safe Boating Certificate or equivalent (we can help you get this)
• A self-starter who will expand and improve the current curriculum and work processes
• Must have excellent sailing skills, experience teaching kids in similar sailing programs, and at least one year of a related supervisory experience
• Self motivated, enthusiastic, and comfortable working with adults and children
• Organized, with good communication and leadership skills
• Physical demands: lifting and moving small sailboats, engines and other equipment
• Operating knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
• Must pass standard FBI background check
• The Sailing Program Director will report to the Executive Committee (President, Vice-President)

Expected Work Schedule:
• Classes run week-days, five days a week, generally 8:30 am until 3:30 pm
• Opportunities exist for additional after-hours and/or week-end instruction
• Additional hours may be required for class planning, equipment maintenance, and administrative duties

Salary will be commensurate with your experience and qualifications, but is competitive. Provided housing is an option.
