Job Description
Portland Yacht Club, Falmouth, Maine, seeks one 420 Race Team Coach and one Opti Race Team Coach. Coach orientation week begins June 15th and the post-season wraps up on August 17th. Sailing instruction begins June 22nd and runs through August 14, 2020. Classes are structured in 4 separate two-week sessions. PYC’s well-designed curriculum guides coaches while offering opportunity for innovations in instruction. Competitive salaries are offered and based on experience.

Portland Yacht Club is a short drive from the dynamic downtown Portland and has numerous after-work racing opportunities in Etchells, J24's and PHRF. PYC celebrated its 150th anniversary in April 2019.

Additional pre-and post- coaching season work opportunities for Coaches who are hired and have USCG launch tender licenses: PYC's Waterfront Manager could offer additional work for launch driving duty prior to and after the Junior Sailing Program schedule, starting in mid-May to mid-June and from the end of August to October. Ask about our launch driving course reimbursement program if you are planning to obtain your USCG launch tender license.
Job Requirements
Candidates should possess:
- US Sailing Level 1 Certification and CPR/First Aid (possible renewal during orientation week)
- Strong background in one-design, dinghy racing
- Prior coaching experience is given strong consideration
- Strong communication skills, enthusiasm and patience for working with kids and parents
- Set example in behavior, language, and Corinthian spirit for youth sailors
- Engaging ability to run lessons and debriefs, and impart knowledge of racing rules and tactics
- Exceptional boat-handling skills for 420's and/or Opti's
- Proficiency and safety when driving a small powerboat
- Organizational/lesson planning skills
- Regatta management skills: travel and manage youth race teams at regattas
- Ability and/or willingness to handle day-to-day boat/equipment maintenance and repairs as they come up
- Having a fun attitude and love of sailing make exceptional sailing coaches at PYC
