Job Description

HEAD INSTRUCTOR

Start date May 28 - Aug 22

The Head Instructor is responsible for the overall  management of the program. The Head Instructor will work with the  Junior Sailing Committee and General Manager to address the needs of the  Program. 

 Our programs offer junior sailing classes on 420s, J22, J24, and Optis.  The Head Instructor will be responsible for managing 3-4 other instructors as well as teaching.  

 The position is for a 15 week period end of May through late August.  The Head Instructor must have prior sailing program experience and be hands - on engaging STEM activities.  

 The Head Instructor is expected to work with the staff to create fun challenges for students that involve teamwork and leadership.   Housing is not provided.  

 Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

 Specific duties include:  

  • Work with the Junior Sailing Committee and General Manager to oversee and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Jr. Sailing, including management of the Instructors. 

    • The Head Instructor should be the first to arrive, and last to leave each day. 

  • Attend all, and provide leadership for, the instructor orientation, parent orientation, and set-up/breakdown of the sailing program equipment and spaces. 

  • Work weeks are approximately 40 hours a week 

  • Lead the Instructors during Prep and Clean-Up Days

  • Advise the Dockmaster and Waterfront Chair of fleet repair needs 

  • Introduce the Program and Instructors on the first day of each session. 

  • Oversee assignment or reassignment of sailors to appropriate boat group. 

  • Assign, reassign, or rotate instructors to boat groups dependent on the needs of the program. 

  • Assign lesson plans to Instructors, or ask Instructors to prepare lesson plans, for the coming week by preceding Thursday. 

  • The Head Instructor shall present him/herself professionally.

    • The NYC uniform shall be worn while in the role of Head Instructor. 

  • Determine the activities of the day, based on weather, tide,  and previous plans. 

  • Manage and participate in the activities of the day as appropriate. 

  • Observe, coach, and counsel instructors as necessary. 

  • Write up final evaluations for the Sailing Committee. 

  • Debrief with Instructors on a daily basis. Encourage forthright discussion. 

  • Be available for daily questions from parents and problem solve with Instructors or General Manager as appropriate.

  • Manage initial response to any emergency situation.  Immediately call for assistance. 

  • Assure adequate shore supervision any time any sailor is on-shore. 

  • Assure that the Club premises are tidy, especially at the end of each day. 

  • Secure the Yard and Facilities at the end of each work day.

  • Update the Head Instructor Manual at the end of the  Summer 

  • Prepare a detailed Fleet Inventory and Fleet Summary at the  end of summer. 

  • Can delegate any of these duties to the other Instructors as  deems appropriate.

 

SAILING INSTRUCTORS (4)

Start date is June 9th - Aug 22

 Our programs offer junior sailing classes on 420s, J22, J24, and Optis. 

The position is for a 10 week period mid-June through late August with the ability to expand into the shoulder seasons.  Housing is not provided.  

 Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Duties including the following: 

  • Attend daily briefing and debriefing meetings with the Head  Instructor . 

  • All Instructors shall present themselves professionally. The NYC uniform shall be worn while in the role of Instructor. Instructors shall provide a  good example and wear their life jacket and closed toe  shoes on the dock, ramps and boats at all times. 

  •  Prepare and execute Chalk-talks. Assist sailors in rigging and de rigging boats. 

  • Assist at dock with launches and dockings, facilitating crew changes as  necessary. 

  • Actively participate in the clean up on a daily basis.

  • Sailing Instructors will perform duties as assigned by the Head Sailing Instructor and General Manager.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Must possess a US Sailing Level 1 certification in good standing.

  • Current CPR/1st Aid

  • Current Safe Sport Certification

  • Competitive sailing experience and coaching experience preferred.

  • High school diploma or GED required, college degree preferred.

Physical/Environmental Considerations

  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (with assistance), and/or up

to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Strong safety element in this role. The employee must be able to stand/remain stationary, walk/move and traverse the docks (uneven surfaces), lift, stoop, kneel, pull, reach, jump and stretch. 

  • Employees will need flexibility to stand on multi-level surfaces safely and be able to remove themselves from dangerous situations quickly. 

  • Employees must be able to communicate with Members and co-workers and give directions and be heard and understood by Members and co-workers. 

  • Employees must have manual dexterity for handling lines and knots and will be subject to repetitive motion.

  • Employees must have adequate visual acuity to operate machinery and spot safety hazards and issues.

  • The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions throughout the day and will be outside with minimal weather protection. 

  • Employees are subject to elements and heat.
