Job Description
The Barrington Yacht Club in Barrington, Rhode Island is hiring a full-time race team coaches for our Opti Green Fleet, Opti Champ Fleet, and c420 Race Teams for the summer 2023 Sail Training Program (STP). With a fleet of over 150 students and 54 boats, BYC operates one of the largest junior sailing programs on Narragansett Bay.
 
For the race coach positions, we are seeking experienced and enthusiastic college-aged sailors. Our staff provides hands-on, minds-on instruction for students at ages 5-18 in Optimists, club 420s, RS Visions, and RS Quests. Coaches are charged with significant responsibility including coaching junior sailors in the fundamentals of sailing, racing, and seamanship, and overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of BYC's sail and power fleet. Our race teams generally compete in 3-4 local NBYA events over the summer, and up to 2 larger regattas that also take place in New England such as Buzzards Bay Regatta or c420 North Americans. The term of employment will span approximately nine weeks from mid June to late August, which includes a set-up week, eight weeks of instruction, and several days to assist with fleet breakdown. This year, instruction will take place from June 26th-August 18th, with a set-up and breakdown week occurring in the weeks before and after the program. Classes meet Monday to Friday from 9 am - 4 pm.
Job Requirements
Job Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will place an emphasis on teaching sailors to challenge themselves by always putting forth the necessary effort while learning to ask the right questions when faced with a difficult skill.
Teaching the importance of preparation for practice and regattas including proper rigging techniques and optimal boat setup.
The ideal candidate will also lead dynamic and purposeful sessions on the water that include effective land drills and daily debriefs.
As a coach you will be expected to facilitate individual and team goal-setting.
Establishing respectful and constructive relationships with students and their families - this includes providing insightful and constructive feedback.
Maintaining open lines of communication when collaborating and planning with fellow staff and the STP Director.
Contribute to an environment that fosters respect of equipment, colleagues and sailors.
Assisting the director in coordinating events both inside and outside of Narragansett Bay.
Leading by example with safety, fun and learning at the forefront.

Job Requirements:
Demonstrated success coaching sailors coupled with significant regatta experience at the local, regional, collegiate level or beyond.
US Sailing Level I and II Certifications required by the start of the season.
CPR/First Aid Certification.
NSABLA-Approved Safe Boating Certificate (such as RI DEM Safe Boating Certificate or other state issued certification)
