Job Description

The Chicago Yacht Club is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Adventure Sailing Captain to join our team for the sailing season. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead and manage sailing experiences for our members and youth programs while working in one of Lake Michigan's most vibrant sailing communities.

This position is considered part-time but can be full-time for the right applicant.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the captain for Chicago Yacht Club’s J145 (Sic Parvis Magna) during club programs, events, and sailing activities. 
  • Coordinate adult and youth team-building experiences aboard the J145, fostering collaboration and communication skills. 
  • Plan and oversee member experience firework cruises on Wednesday evenings, ensuring participants a safe and enjoyable outing. 
  • Oversee safety protocols, including adherence to all Coast Guard, US Sailing, and Chicago Yacht Club safety standards. 
  • Conduct sailing instruction for youth and adults, including keelboat training and STEM-based sailing programs. 
  • Supervise and mentor students and crew members, fostering a safe, inclusive, and educational environment. 
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and coordinate repairs or upkeep of club sailboats. 
  • Collaborate with the On the Water Director, Sailing Program Director, Bosun, and other staff to ensure the smooth operation of all sailing programs. 
  • Maintain accurate records, including safety checklists, lesson plans, and incident reports. 

 

Preferred Qualities

  • Have a passion for sailing and education.
  • Experience teaching STEM principles through sailing or similar activities.
  • Prior involvement in yacht club programs or community sailing initiatives.
  • Adaptability in employing diverse teaching methods tailored to various audiences and learning styles.
  • Proficiency in managing students, especially those in middle and high school.
  • Passion for outdoor activities, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Capability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

 

Qualifications & Certification Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience sailing and captaining larger sailboats (35 feet or larger).
  • Current 25-Ton or greater USCG Captains License (required)
  • Sailing Endorsement on USCG Captain’s License (preferred)
  • SafeSport Certification (required)
  • First Aid, AED, and CPR Certified (required)
  • US Sailing Keelboat Instructor Certification (preferred)
  • US Sailing Instructor STEM Certification (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of sailing safety and maintenance protocols.
  • Excellent teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with youth, adults, and diverse groups.
