Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) develops academic success and leadership in underserved NYC youth, and provides maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public high schools to teach math, science, and leadership to underserved public high school students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides sailing lessons and a membership program. HRCS has locations in Chelsea and Inwood.
The Assistant Fleet Manager works under the supervision of the Fleet and Operations Manager to assist in the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the HRCS fleet. This includes, but is not limited to, completing repairs, troubleshooting engines, performing preventive maintenance, and maintaining records. In addition, the Assistant Fleet Manager will work with HRCS operations interns, instructing them on how to perform basic operations tasks. This position will require weekend shifts and travel between our locations: Pier 66 in Chelsea, Dyckman Marina in Inwood, and Viking Boat Yard in Verplanck. While prior experience maintaining sailboats is preferred, this is an opportunity for a candidate with good technical skills to learn and grow into the role.
This is a full-time in-person role.
Meet daily with Operations & Fleet Manager about roles and responsibilities, specific duties, fleet readiness issues, facility maintenance, scheduled events, and general fleet preparedness.
Regularly check in with Community Program Staff
Manage Operations Interns
Support and interact with the Public, Membership, Instructors, Participants and Youth Programs by facilitating safety and sailing as Leader of the Day
Customer and Member interaction
Greet members and the public and be available to discuss HRCS as needed. Familiarize sailors with safety procedures
Email and verbal communication skills
Leader of the Day/safety officer
Engine Servicing and Maintenance
Understand and perform basic engine maintenance and repair on a fleet of 4hp-150hp outboard engines of various makes.
Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working on the water
Sailboat rigging and marine systems
Ordering and Inventory Tracking
Manage Operations Interns
Sailboat Repair and Maintenance
Proficiency in marine repair and maintenance preferred, including:
Fiberglass repair and finishing
Sailing hardware and rigging
Familiarity with marine hardware and systems, specifically J-24 and J-80 systems
Outboard engine troubleshooting and repair
Able to carry 60 lbs
Sailing and/or teaching experience preferred but not required
Experience working with power and hand tools
Experience supervising interns or students preferred
Be able to utilize Google suite in a proficient manner
Experience trailering boats preferred
Preferred Licenses and Certifications (HRCS can help the candidate in acquiring these once hired.)
Drivers License or open to obtaining one
US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification + Safe Sport
USCG Captains License or Limited Launch Driver’s license
Safe Boating Course
Compensation and Salary Range
$50,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience
