The Block Island Club (BIC) Open Position: Director of Sailing Summer 2023
Founded in 1963, the Block Island Club is dedicated to attracting and bringing together the entire Island community, including, but not limited to, full-time residents of Block Island, summer residents, and visitors to Block Island. Its purpose is to promote the general welfare of the Island community through recreational and educational programs for children and adults, including, but not limited to, sailing and seamanship, swimming and water safety, tennis, and arts and crafts. The Block Island Club further exists to promote an appreciation of the unique character of Block Island’s natural environment among children and adults in the community.
The Club benefits from approximately 2,500 square feet of waterfront located in a designated recreational zone. The boats are launched from its infrastructure of floating docks and five dedicated moorings. The Club’s sailing equipment currently includes 35 sailing dinghies and six sailing keelboats. The Club has two tennis courts which also serve as pickleball courts and has an active summer community.
The BIC seeks an enthusiastic and motivated individual with a passion for working with children who is safety-conscious and possesses a combination of teaching, managerial, and sailing skills. Our programs include beginner five- and 6-year-olds through adult sailing instruction and private lessons and charters.
Position Summary: Seasonal Full-time Position Director of Sailing is responsible for the management of both adult and children club offerings, which includes a children’s sailing development program with all levels and up to 70 weekly participants, as well as various private adult programs, private lessons, and charters.
Position Overview: The Director will lead the club sailing education and foster a love of the sailing sport in addition to working closely with the Club Director on general club responsibilities, including;
· Working with the junior sailing staff providing expertise and support on the waterfront
· Coordinate daily responsibilities and staffing of sailing resources (6-8 junior instructors)
· Management of club equipment: ensuring and coordinating high standards for maintenance
· Running and organizing regattas and weekly races
· Daily coordination with Club Director on clubhouse management and supporting social events
