Job Description

Sailing Director

Summary Description:

The Sailing Specialist will assume full responsibility for developing and implementing Camp Interlaken’s sailing program. The program is designed to teach sailing skills, review existing abilities, and improve safety knowledge and techniques in the spirit of fun, quality and safety.

Responsibilities Include:

 I. Sailing Lessons

 A. Supervise all sailing instructors.

 B. Ensure that all sailing instructors follow American Red Cross guidelines.

 C. Ensure that all sailing instructors challenge and teach their students.

 D. Ensure that all sailing instructors have a skill chart for each activity and that the charts are appropriately utilized.
II. Safety

A.   A. Ensure that all sailing safety standards from the Camp Interlaken JCC Safety Manual are upheld.

B.   B. Strictly follow all regulations from the Waterfront Director’s Manual.

C.   C. Ensure that all instructors and campers follow the Camp Interlaken JCC Safety Manual and Waterfront Director’s Manual standards.

D.   D. Ensure that safety skills are taught, learned, and practiced in every sailing class.

E.   E. Ensure that the sailing patrol boat drivers perform their duties properly and safely at all times.

F.    F. Consult with the Program Director about any question as to whether a sailing instructor is performing safely and will handle the situation appropriately.

III. Equipment

A.   A. Responsible for the upkeep of all sailing equipment (i.e., patrol boats, sails, life vests, etc.).

B.   B. Notify the Program Director of any repairs or replacements that may be necessary.

C.   C. Responsible for ensuring that there is a sufficient amount of gas and oil available.

• Ability to work with children, and communicate with, relate to, and be a personal role model for them
• Active, innovative, and creative in approach to working with children
• Strong enthusiasm for and broad knowledge of sailing
• Has experience teaching others, preferably youth.
• Responsible and can manage sailing supplies and equipment safely
• Ability to accept guidance and support, as well as ask for help
• Comfortable working with others who have different work styles
• Comfortable working with children who have different learning styles
