Job Description

Overview:

Instructors shall be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the sport of sailing and introduce and nurture students in the fundamentals of sailing as well as the importance of the natural environment in which we sail and the basic leadership skills inherent in the sport. Emphasis is placed on the safety of students and staff, a high level of instruction, supporting the individual needs of each student, and a professional manner. Compensation and teaching assignments are determined by experience, level of training/certification, and teaching/technical skills.

Compensation: $16 - $21/Hour. Schedule: Weekdays 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, June 25 thru August 10, 2025.

Reports to: Head Instructor

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications: Sailing Instructors shall hold, at a minimum, the following credentials: Current US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Certification, Level 1 SafeSport and Teaching & Coaching Fundamentals Online certifications CPR/First Aid/AED. NY State Safe Boating. (NASBLA) All credentials shall be current by June 19th, 2024 and maintained through August 10th, 2024. Alternatively, if these credentials are not held already, applicants shall be willing to acquire credentials prior to June 19th, 2024 and may be eligible for reimbursement for expenses incurred in accordance with the Policy on Reimbursement of CYC Sailing Education Employees. Shall have a passion for sailing, the environment and working with kids with a positive, enthusiastic, flexible and professional attitude. Shall possess strong problem solving skills, people skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.

 

Responsibilities: Sailing Instructors shall teach and demonstrate safety, boat handling and sailing theory to youth ages 8-18. Including developing and following lesson plans that include dry land and on-the-water drills and inclement weather activities with an emphasis on teamwork among both instructors and students. Shall empathize with the students and be able to adapt to their individual needs while fostering an inclusive environment where youth, volunteers, and staff are physically and emotionally safe. Shall report important information, such as weather conditions or concerns with a participant, to the Head Instructor. Shall set an example for participants and fellow instructors by being aware, engaged and proactive. This means helping with any task which keeps the program running smoothly, including maintaining equipment, communicating with parents and/or volunteers, tidying work areas or picking up trash. Shall mentor Junior Instructors and CITs in sailing skills, teaching skills, class management and the operation of Chelsea Yacht Club’s Youth Sail program, in addition to regularly and proactively cultivating their own skills in each of these areas.
