Are you ready to transform the Midwest youth sailing scene? To coach tomorrow’s champions in some of the most exciting conditions (Lake Michigan) and in a variety of racing formats and boats? We’re searching for TWO Head Coaches - one specializing in singlehanded (Opti & ILCA) and another in doublehanded (420s, Club & Scholastic) racing. But it’s bigger than that. We’re seeking visionary and passionate coaches who live and breathe the thrill of racing and the art of coaching.

The Chicago Yacht Club Sailing School is on a mission: We’re not just about great results (although our legacy speaks for itself); we’re about building the next generation of confident, resilient sailors who love the water and embrace the adventure of racing. We have a strong and burgeoning Opti team as well as the largest High School Sailing program in the country. We have the assets and support of a Platinum Yacht Club combined with the forward-thinking to embrace Wing Foiling and Youth J70 sailing as well as Youth Match Racing and much more.

Job Requirements

Who YOU are:

  • Competitive dinghy racing experience
  • Proven coaching experience 
  • Passionate about youth sailing and youth development (sailor-centric)
  • Willing and excited to travel frequently with your team
  • Ability to inspire the next generation of sailors and boost retention
  • Organized and self-motivated with excellent communication skills for both sailors and parents
  • Mentorship to and management of part-time coaches
  • Plan and execute SAFE, PRODUCTIVE and PROFESSIONAL practice sessions
  • Comfortable driving a large trailer and supporting maintenance team for relevant fleets
  • Terrific team player among the CYC staff 
  • Excited to be located in a major metropolitan area and sailing hub

Qualifications:

  • Competitive dinghy racing experience and a history of success as a youth sailing coach
  • Passion for youth development through the sport of sailing
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • US Sailing certified Level 1, Level 3 preferred or other NGB certification *
  • CPR/ First Aid/ AED certified *
  • CDC Concussion training program “Heads Up” certified *
  • US Sailing Safe Sport Certified *

* Or willing to acquire

Physically Capable - This position, at times, requires extensive physical activity in all weather conditions. The Head Coach must physically be capable of the demands of the job including, but not limited to, hauling and launching boats, loading trailers, setting and pulling anchors etc.

Flexible Schedule - Head Coach will often be required to attend evening meetings, work extended hours and/or weekend events. Typical school year practices are in the evenings with competitions on the weekends.

Computer & Technology Literate - Head Coach should be largely available via email and phone to carry out all duties. They will be required to be proficient in database management, Club Spot, Google suite etc. Additionally Head Coach  should be up to date on using technology for coaching such as drones, GoPros and video, or the willingness to learn.
