Looking to spend your summer in Maine and enjoy the sunshine and water? Small Point Summer School is in search of a Sailing Director for our sailing program at our day camp in Phippsburg, ME. This person would be responsible for managing a group of up to 20 campers as well as sailing counselors and CITs. Ideally, you have enough sailing experience to teach campers ages 5 to 16 the basics of sailing and water safety. Our fleet consists of Opti’s, Lasers and Small Point’s native boat, the Small Point One Design.
Be a leader of a group of campers as well as other counselors; responsible for each camper’s health, safety and participation in all aspects of Summer School life. This responsibility demands enthusiasm, humor, patience, energy, maturity, organization, communication, focus and creativity on a continual basis in order to be an effective leader.
Program Directors are to represent themselves as positive role models to all campers during camp hours; in conversations, dress, manners, actions and appearance.
Sailing program hours are about 14 hours with many opportunities for additional hours in other programs. Also possibility for other employment within the area (with housing) making it a more full time gig!
Pay: competitive salary that will increase depending on experience and qualifications
Job Responsibilities for Program Directors
Provide a safe atmosphere for campers
Establish a fun environment through appropriate techniques
Supervise and participate in all areas (i.e. sailing, arts and nature, tennis, etc.)
Supervise and assist counselors with daily matters and issues; reporting concerns to the Directors
Plan daily curriculum, rainy day games and activities for campers
Oversee campers in every capacity through all parts of the day, including drop-off and pick-up
Continually model and teach character development qualities
Manage campers using appropriate discipline techniques
Help plan, train and participate in all staff trainings and staff and weekly staff meetings
Take good attendance and maintain accurate and updated headcounts at all times
Immediately advise the Directors of any accidents or incidents
Maintain open lines of communication with parents, other staff and the Directors
Act as a role model within and outside of SPSS
Act as a role model and assist in training CITs
Arrive on-time, 15 minutes before program, and report any absences ahead of time, if possible
Maintain a positive and respectful attitude
Additional Responsibilities for Sailing Program Director
Responsible for assisting in launching and hauling sailboats at beginning and end of the season
Responsible for assisting in cleaning and storing equipment at end of season
Responsible for ensuring motorboats are properly maintained with fuel and such
Responsible for ensuring sailboats and equipment are properly maintained and cared for; can assist in basic repairs and such as needed
Responsible for campers safety on the water and ensuring all children are wearing life jackets at all time
