Director of the Junior Sailing Program
 
SUMMARY:  The Director of the Junior Sailing Program oversees the QYC Junior Sailing Program and is responsible for every aspect of the Program’s operation. The Director will create an environment for both staff and students that prioritizes safety, learning and embodies the Quissett Yacht Club mission and values.

This role is year-round with two distinct “modes”—sailing season and off season. The sailing season is approximately 10 weeks of full time, hands-on managerial and administrative focus, overseeing all aspects of the QYC Junior Sailing Program activities. The Director oversees all Program staff including Race Team coaches. Remote support of 5 – 10 hours per month is provided in the off season, with work focused on adjusting curriculum, planning for seasonal staffing, meeting with committees for the yacht club and preparing for the upcoming sailing season. The Director, in consultation with the Chair of the JSPC, will drive overall QYC Junior Sailing Program strategy.

General Responsibilities:

  • ·       Working with the JSPC Chair to recruit and hire qualified instructors
  • ·       Planning with the JSPC Chair for budgeting staffing and salary needs and operating costs of the Program, long term planning, curriculum and participation in regattas
  • ·       Reporting in writing to the JSPC and QYC Board of Director and attending scheduled meetings, as needed
  • ·       Overseeing daily operations of the Program including safety, staff training, quality of instruction, implementation of curriculum, supervision of behavior, communication with parents, record keeping and boat maintenance
  • ·       Overseeing the de-rigging, hauling, inventory and storing of all sailboats, trailers and equipment at the end of the August session and the launching and preparation of all equipment prior to the start of the Program in June
  • ·       Conducting exit interviews and preparing written performance evaluations for staff instructors and coaches by September 1
  • ·       Overseeing, and where necessary, developing and sending pre- and post-season communications to appropriate parties, to include, but not limited to; QYC Board, JSPC, students and parents of the Program
 

Specific Duties and Tasks:

Safety

  • ·       Assures implementation of the Health/Safety & Emergency Policies & Procedures and reviews them annually for any necessary adjustments
  • ·       Schedules pre-season safety/certification classes as needed, including First Aid and CPR
  • ·       Administers swimming tests on the first day of each session
  • ·       Conducts periodic safety drills
  • ·       Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations including CORI and SORI requirements
  • ·       Prepares and communicates written accident/incident reports
  • ·       Assures that safety boats are properly equipped with functioning safety equipment per the QYC Safety & Emergency Policies & Procedures

Management

  • ·       Acts as role model and assures implementation of Program standards of sportsmanlike, professional behavior – as well as drug, alcohol and tobacco use, dress and student relationships
  • ·       Advertises the Program registration including newspaper and Falmouth Public Schools fliers and other avenues, as appropriate
  • ·       Works with coaches to set and communicate the regatta schedule—must be set and communicated by May 1
  • ·       Oversee the launching, rigging and planning sessions the week prior to the start of class instruction, including but not limited to:

o   Review and practice of all Safety & Emergency Policies & Procedures with all instructors

o   Review of and planning for the designed curriculum, policies and procedures with all instructors

o   Pre-season inventory of all boats, gear, Sailing Room and First Aid supplies

  • ·       With the JSPC Chair, develops, maintains and annually reviews a comprehensive curriculum for all levels and classes of the Program
  • ·       Monitors the Head Instructors’ and race team Coaches’ management of the Program curriculum, including daily instructor assignments and daily review of lesson plans
  • ·       Ensures that there is a plan in place to monitor student progress and that the Head and Senior Instructors implement it
  • ·       Trains instructors and coaches and provides written performance evaluations twice per session (minimum), or as necessary
  • ·       Ensures that ALL instructors become proficient in handling all QYC vessels under all conditions, both in the harbor and on Buzzards Bay
  • ·       Notifies student and parents regarding the Program schedule changes and special events
  • ·       Plans, manages and serves as Regatta Chair for the Quissett hosted Unkie regatta
  • ·       Plans and runs the July and August orientation and awards sessions and works with instructors to determine recommended class placement of sailors at end of season
  • ·       Monitors and assess condition of Optis, 420s, Bullseyes, docks, classroom facilities and any other necessary sailing gear on an ongoing basis and addresses needs as follows:

o   Performs or coordinates repairs as appropriate

o   Ensures logs are kept for boats repairs

o   Serves as primary liaison with QYC Fleet Captains regarding maintenance of QYC motorized and sailing fleets

  • ·       Plans and manages the weekly preparation of boats and equipment to meet the needs of classes and race team travel to regattas
  • ·       Prepares and enforces checklist for instructors to use at the end of each day to ensure that equipment is neatly stored and that all club areas used by the Program are clean
  • ·       With the race coaches, plans and organizes the Opti and 420 Race Teams’ participation in and transportation to all regattas, including but not limited to:

o   Opti Unkie Cup Series

o   Opti Race Team designated QYC supported regattas – generally 2- 3 per season

o   420 Race Team designated QYC supported – generally 4 – 5 per season

o   Communication with parents, coaches and sailors regarding upcoming events and deadlines

o   Ensuring appropriate planning and communications are in place for the boat transport (either sailing or towing to the regatta), traveling sailors, parents, coaches and other support personnel and that the sailors have appropriate oversight and support when traveling

Record Keeping

  • ·       Maintains accurate records for instructor attendance and payroll
  • ·       Organizes and assures that Instructors document student attendance records and daily lesson plans for all classes
  • ·       Organizes and addresses incident reports for equipment damage and breakages
  • ·       Assures that periodic written inventory checks are taken during the seasons and are documented pre- and post-season
  • ·       Works with the Treasurer to review and approve Program expenditures and reimbursements
  • ·       Tracks enrollment percentages relative to Program capacity and budgeting expectations
  • Prepares and delivers a report to the JSPC and flag officers summarizing the completed sailing season by Sept 1
Job Requirements
• 3 – 5 years of sailing program management and/or coaching/teaching experience
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Instructor Level 1 Certification (Level 2 or 3 preferred)
• First Aid and CPR current certifications
• Administrative and interpersonal skills commensurate with a role that will interact with board members, parents and students on a daily basis
• Strong, demonstrated understanding of sail and power boating
