Job Description

We're Hiring Sailing Camp Counselors to inspire and support young sailors this summer at the Guilford Yacht Club!

Position Summary: 

The counselor shall be responsible for promoting a positive climate within their group and ultimately within the entire camp. The counselor is responsible for ensuring that each camper has an enjoyable and safe camp experience. The children’s confidence in the counselor is most important. The counselor must always be aware of the feelings of all the campers and sympathetic to individual needs of the campers. 

Supervision Received: 

The Counselor receives general supervision from the Program Coordinator with direct supervision from the Camp Directors. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Administer daily camp activities. 
  • Encourage and motivate campers to participate in all camp functions. 
  • Attend all staff meetings. 
  • Stay with group for entire session. Never leave child unsupervised. 
  • Keep camp areas clean and safe before, during and after activities. 
  • Be responsible for the behavior management of the group. In extenuating circumstances, do not hesitate to bring the camper to the Director. 
  • Participate in all special camp activities. 
  • Communicate daily with parents about campers, policies, and trip information 
  • Counselors must check in/out children daily 
Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to be aware of individual needs of all campers within your group. 
  • Ability to use good judgment, patience, and understanding. 
  • Knowledge of age appropriate activities. 
  • Ability to continually strive to enrich the program by using imagination and energetic approaches in all learning and playing situations. 

 Education/Experience: 

  • Experience with children in a camp setting or other related area. 
  • Sailing Instructors must have a solid sailing background, with racing experience in the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association, high school, or college preferred. The ability to motivate and inspire junior sailors is a must. Candidates must have (or be willing to obtain prior to the start of the program) at least a Level 1 US Sailing Certification, US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling 
  • CPR/First Aid.
