Job Description

The Island of Hawai’i YMCA is looking to offer youth sailing instruction for the summer of 2021 out of Kawaihae Harbor, Hawai’i. We are looking for an instructor who can lead summer sailing programs with up to 12 students per class independently with some support from volunteers. We start youth sailors (10 years and older) on Toppers and have access to Lasers and a variety of other boats. We use a small power boat with an outboard motor as our safety boat. Our volunteer network can likely assist with housing and transportation for the duration of employment (please inquire for more details).
Sailing classes will be held Monday through Thursday from June 14 to July 23, 2021. Work days will be between 6 and 8 hours long.


  • The sailing instructor must be able to teach safety, boat handling and sailing theory in dinghies to beginning and intermediate youth and adult sailors.
  • Must be able to develop and follow lesson plans which include dry land and on-the water drills and inclement weather activities.
  • Instructor is responsible for notifying students and parents of any changes to class times, postponement due to weather conditions and make-up dates. Accurate records of attendance, injuries and boat damage is required.
  • Instructor is responsible for secure storage of all equipment at the end of the day.

Job Requirements
Current U.S. Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructor certification, current first aid and
CPR certification and a NASBLA Boaters Education certification. Must have a passion for sailing and a positive, enthusiastic, flexible attitude. Must be able to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, number of volunteers, etc. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment with the YMCA.
