Job Description

Newport Harbor Yacht Club (NHYC) is seeking a passionate and experienced Head Coach to lead our Junior Sailing Non-Calm Program. Established in 1916, NHYC has been a premier sailing institution on the West Coast, fostering excellence in competitive sailing. Located on the picturesque Balboa Peninsula, our state-of-the-art clubhouse, completed in 2019, serves as the heart of our vibrant sailing community. NHYC offers year-round junior sailing programs for sailors ages 8 to 18, competing in Naples Sabots, CFJs, ILCAs, and Club 420s. Our fall and spring programs typically include 30-40 sailors, while our Non-Calm Summer Program hosts approximately 150 participants. We are committed to developing skilled, confident sailors through expert coaching, structured training, and competitive racing opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Junior Sailing Program Director to develop and maintain the sailing calendar, including program dates, regattas, and events.
  • Oversee and lead the Non-Calm Junior Sailing Program, ensuring a safe, fun, and competitive learning environment.
  • Support and/or direct other NHYC sailing and coaching initiatives as directed by the Non-Calm Board, such as the NHYC Team Racing Program.
  • Assist the Program Director with tasks related to summer program planning, hiring, and organizing.
  • Develop and implement structured training plans for sailors of all skill levels.
  • Mentor and manage a team of 15+ assistant coaches to foster a culture of excellence and teamwork.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive curriculum for all Junior Sailing Programs.
  • Coordinate regatta participation, travel logistics, and coaching at local, regional, and national events.
  • Maintain fleet equipment and ensure proper safety protocols are followed.
  • Collaborate with NHYC leadership, parents, and members to promote junior sailing development.

Job Requirements
  • Ability to manage 15+ subordinates and oversee coaching staff.
  • Ability to create and implement a curriculum for all Junior Sailing Programs.
  • Ability to coach all levels of sailing, with expected high proficiency in advanced junior sailing (singlehanded and doublehanded platforms).
  • Strong communication skills with all stakeholders, including parents, sailors, and the parent committee.
  • Professional and approachable attitude with a passion for mentoring young sailors.
  • 4-year college degree required.
  • US Sailing Level 2 or 3 Coach Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • All levels of coaching experience preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification required.
  • Strong leadership and effective communication skills to foster a positive learning environment.
  • Prior work experience with kids, demonstrating patience, mentorship, and enthusiasm.
  • A deep passion for sailing and a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence.
