Job Description

The Miles River Yacht Club is seeking a Head Coach for its summer 2026 sailing camp. Head Coach is a visible and substantial leadership position in the yacht club and the local community. The Head Coach is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the sailing camp, hiring and managing staff, communicating with parents, and organizing travel to regattas. Head Coaches make deep friendships with families and peers through their passion for sailing.

Our sailing school offers eight weeks of instruction from June 15th to August 7th. With an average of 70 students per week (aged 6-17), 50 club-owned boats, and 15 instructors, MRYC operates one of the larger sailing programs on the Chesapeake Bay. From intro boating and Adventure Sailing to our racing teams in Optis and 420s, our students have plenty of opportunities to explore sailing in a fun camp environment. Instructors work together to foster a love of sailing and encourage those who want to compete.

The Head Coach leads the Junior Sailing Camp and works closely with the volunteer Junior Sail Director, Club Manager, and the Club’s Junior Sail Committee. Candidates should have experience managing a staff of instructors and a proven ability to plan, organize, and direct sailing programs. Candidates also need to enjoy working with young sailors, have a familiarity with racing, and communicate effectively with sailors, staff, and parents.

Duties:

  • Hire, train, and manage a staff of 15 instructors
  • Develop and assist instructors in curriculum and lesson plans
  • Ensure students are progressing toward goals
  • Communicate with parents about milestones
  • Maintain powerboats, sailboats, and other equipment
  • Organize regatta participants, logistics, and travel
  • Run morning staff meetings to prepare coaches
  • Resolve coaching or class issues
  • Oversee prep and break down weeks

The ideal candidate would have:

  • US Sailing Level 3 Head Instructor Certified
  • Experience in junior and collegiate sailing
  • Taught beginners through advanced racers
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Must pass a background screening and drug test
  • Available from June 1st until August 14th

Compensation:
