Job Description
The Barrington Yacht Club in Barrington, Rhode Island is seeking a Head Instructor for the summer 2022 Sail Training Program (STP).
With a fleet of over 200 students and 58 boats, 20 Instructors, BYC operates one of the largest junior sailing programs on Narragansett Bay. BYC is located between Newport and Providence RI and provides convenient access to racing on Narragansett Bay, Cape Cod, Long Island Sound.
For the position of Head Instructor, we are seeking experienced and enthusiastic college-aged sailors. Our staff provides hands-on, minds-on instruction for students at ages 5-18 in Optimists, Prams, 420s, and RS Vision’s. You are charged with significant responsibility including:
• Assisting with coaching junior sailors in the fundamentals of sailing, racing, and seamanship;
• Managing Coaches, Instructors and Instructors-in-Training;
• Overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of the Club’s sail and power fleet;
• Staff evaluation, record keeping, review lesson plans, discipline;
• Ensure on and off the water safety;
The term of employment will span approximately nine weeks from mid June to late August—which includes a set-up week, eight weeks of instruction, and several days to assist with fleet breakdown. Classes meet daily from 9 am - 4 pm.
Job Requirements
Job Responsibilities:
- The ideal candidate will place an emphasis on teaching sailors to challenge themselves by always putting forth the necessary effort while learning to ask the right questions when faced with a difficult skill.
- The ideal candidate will direct instructors to run dynamic and purposeful sessions on the water that include effective land drills and daily debriefs.
- Establishing respectful and constructive relationships with students and their families - This includes providing insightful and constructive feedback;
- Maintaining open lines of communication when collaborating & planning with instructors, STP Director and parents;
- Contribute to an environment that fosters respect of equipment, colleagues and sailors;
- Assisting the Director in coordinating events both inside and outside of Narragansett Bay;
- Leading by example with safety, fun and learning at the forefront.

Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated success coaching sailors coupled with significant regatta experience at the local, regional, collegiate level or beyond.
- US Sailing Level I & II Certifications required by the start of the season.
- CPR/First Aid Certification
- NSABLA-Approved Safe Boating Certificate (such as RI DEM Safe Boating Certificate or other state issued certification)
