Job Description

Sakonnet Yacht Club is seeking a Head Instructor for the 2021 SYC summer season (approximately 10 weeks from mid-June through late August). The Head Instructor will lead the staff of 12 Instructors, 5 Junior Instructors, and 5 Harbor Camp Counsellors in designing, planning, and teaching classes. Sailing classes run 5+ days per week: Monday–Friday 8:00–4:30, plus Saturday mornings. Harbor Camp classes run 3 days/week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

Who we are: The goal of The Sakonnet Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is for kids to enjoy their time on the water, while learning nautical skills and forming friendships.

Our Junior Sailing Program strives to promote a lifelong love of sailing, for kids aged 9–17. While sailing skills are what we teach, we also hope to create an atmosphere where kids and families can form friendships and enjoy spending time at our club.

Our Harbor Camp program is an introduction to life on the water, for children 6–8 years old. The harbor camp operates similarly to a traditional day camp and emphasizes safety and fun above all else!

Whom we are looking for: The Sakonnet Yacht Club is looking for a highly motivated individual who has a passion for working with kids. Sailing knowledge and skill are key components, as we will look to the Head to raise the level of competence among both students and Instructors. Ability to teach that knowledge and skill is equally important! Passion and patience in working with kids is a given. The Head will need to be organized and disciplined, and able to represent SYC to our students’ parents.

If you believe you would make a great addition to our team, then we would love to hear from you. Please apply, by February 28, 2021.

Job Requirements
Sailing Skills: Competence in handling dinghies and small keelboats. Racing skills. Seamanship skills.
Teaching Skills: Experience with teaching kids.
Directing Skills: Organizational ability to structure the curriculum. Managing skills to guide, direct, and coach sailing instructor staff.
Attitude: Passion for sailing and for teaching kids! No yelling, please.
Safety: US Sailing Level 1; CPR.
