Job Description
The Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club in Kilmarnock VA seeks a Head Instructor for our 2023 Junior Sailing Summer Camps. Over four one-week sessions, youth aged 7 to 17 learn sailing skills, seamanship and boating safety on our fleet of Optis and 420s in a beautiful country club setting with private marina and excellent facilities. In our program, students improve their skills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere which emphasizes teamwork, self-reliance, sportsmanship, and enjoyment of sailing.
We seek a Head Instructor who can bring prior instructional experience, organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm and a love of sailing to collaboratively revise and implement our camp curriculum. Prior to the program’s mid-June start, the Head Instructor will work with our Sailing Master to develop updated lesson plans, land- and water-based activities, assessment materials, and other aspects of a successful program. This planning and development work will be paid and can be done remotely.
During the four-week program (June 19 – July 14, Monday to Friday), the Head Instructor will oversee all sailing camp operations including supervision of staff instructors, development and implementation of daily lesson plans in accordance with weather and student skills and interests, ongoing assessment of students’ skill progression, and enforcement of safety rules and discipline.
Additional support will be provided by adult volunteers, who will assist with daily operations such check-in/checkout, and supervision of students during Instructors’ lunch break. The Sailing Master will work with the Head Instructor to resolve any boat maintenance issues that may need additional support.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience, starting at $1000 per program week. Compensation for program development work will be approximately $750, dependent upon time commitment. Housing can be provided during the program.
