Job Description
Cedar Point Yacht Club (CPYC) is seeking an experienced, talented, detail-oriented Head Instructor for the 2022 summer program.  The Head Instructor is a role model for all instructors and participants in the CPYC Jr. Sailing program, exemplifying integrity and the characteristics expected of all Jr. Sailing Program staff: respect, responsibility, and good sportsmanship at all times, both on and off the water. The Head Instructor should be enthusiastic, with a positive attitude. This role is critical to the success of the CPYC Jr. Sailing program.

Founded in 1887, CPYC is located on the Long Island Sound in Westport, Connecticut. The mission of CPYC’s Junior Sailing Program is to introduce Jr. Sailors to the joy of sailing and the thrill of sailboat racing. All classes focus on basic boat handling, seamanship, and sportsmanship; while building racing performance and tactical skills. We strive to develop teamwork, individual initiative, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

The Head Instructor reports to the Head Coach, Tino Galan who works under the direction of the Club Manager and Governor in Charge of Jr. Sailing.  The Head Instructor is responsible for the daily on land and on the water instruction of morning and afternoon class sessions and will provide input and execute curriculum outlined by the Head Coach, ensuring competency across all sailors in their classes

The Head Instructor is expected to act as a role model and mentor for seven Jr. Sailing Instructors. The Head Instructor will also create a weekly newsletter to be distributed to Jr. Sailing Families and the end of the year recap video/slideshow (show your creativity).  The Head Instructor will travel with their team to away regattas and are expected to work to ensure their safety and success while all adhering to the CPYC Code of Conduct both on and off the water.

CPYC runs an eight-week summer program with approximately 90 Jr. Sailors, ages 7-18. Our younger sailors participate in Basin Bandits (week long introductory program for 7yr old) and our Jr. Sailing Fleets include Opti, Feva, C420, Laser Radial, 4.7, and Laser Standard. We also offer a Jr. Big Boat Program for our older Jr. Sailors. Throughout the Jr Sailing season, CPYC will host several Jr. Regatta’s which Jr Staff will assist with either on the water coaching or serving as Race Committee.

All Jr Sailing staff attend a paid one-week training session at CPYC prior to the start of the 8-week Program. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
