Job Description

Introduction:

The University of Michigan Sailing Team (the Team) is seeking a dynamic and ambitious Head Coach to lead practices, develop the sailing skills of its members, and maintain team cohesion. Located in Ann Arbor Michigan, a city ranked #1 by US News and World Report for best quality of life, the Team is a student-run, national-level competitor within the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA) of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). While sailing at the University of Michigan is a club sport, the Team possesses comparable resources to peer varsity programs.

The Team desires a strong individual to guide its continued success at both the Conference and National levels. The ideal candidate will lead practices, coach regattas, spearhead student-athlete recruitment, and advise the executive board.

Required Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree;
  • Valid U.S Driver's License;
  • US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification;
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification;
  • Familiarity with operating a powerboat;
  • Experience with fleet and team racing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Substantial fleet and team racing experience in FJs or 420s;
  • High-level collegiate dinghy experience;
  • Prior coaching experience at the club, collegiate, or high school level;
  • US Sailing Level 2 or 3 Instructor certification;
  • Ability to conduct minor maintenance work on equipment;
  • Knowledgeable in the Racing Rules of Sailing, ICSA and MCSA By-Laws, and ICSA and MCSA Procedural Rules.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead practices:
    • Prepare and lead drills and chalk talks for each practice (3 scheduled per week);
    • Provide feedback for sailor development on and off the water;
    • Coach and ensure the safety of sailors during practice from a powerboat. 
  • Coach regattas:
    • Travel to regattas each weekend during the season;
    • Set boat pairings and select starting rotations for regattas in the best interest of the team;
    • Actively coach and make pairing & rotation adjustments.
  • Recruit Student-Athletes to the University of Michigan:
    • Proactively engage academically qualified and athletically talented students;
    • Foster relationships with high school and club coaches to further the team's recruiting efforts.
  • Advise the Executive Board 
    • Coordinate with the board semesterly to set sailing-related goals and plans;  
    • Help provide continuity during Executive Board transitions;
    • Communicate long-term goals and initiatives between boards;
    • Advise on other team decisions when necessary.

 

2024-2025 Schedule 

*Subsequent seasons will follow a similar schedule revolving around the University of Michigan academic calendar.

Fall Season: 19 August - 15 November | Practices, Instruction, Boat Maintenance, Recruiting, Curriculum Planning 

  • Mon: Chalk Talk + Executive Board Meeting (7-9 PM) on Central Campus
  • Tuesday: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue
  • Wednesday: Off
  • Thursday: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue
  • Friday: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue OR Regatta Travel
  • Saturday - Sunday: Regatta Competition

Winter Offseason: 16 November - 28 February
  Recruiting, Curriculum Planning, Professional Development

  • Away from campus with regular check-ins with the Executive Board

Spring Break Training: 2 March - 8 March | Full-time training at a warm-weather venue

  • Sun: Travel and Setup | Mon-Fri: Practice (9 AM - 5 PM) | Sat: Travel to Ann Arbor

Spring Season: 9 March - 1 May | Practices, Instruction, Boat Maintenance, Recruiting, Curriculum Planning 

  • Mon: Chalk Talk + Executive Board Meeting (7-9 PM) on Central Campus
  • Tues: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue
  • Wed: Off
  • Thu: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue
  • Fri: Practice (3-7 PM) at Sailing Venue OR Regatta Travel

Nationals Training (regardless of qualification): 5 May - 16 May
  Full-Time Training:

  • Mon-Fri: Practice at Sailing Venue or other Midwest Venue

National Championship Regattas: 16 May - 31 May (dependent on performance)

  • Regatta Travel and Competition at Spring National Championship Regattas 

Summer Break: 1 June  - 18 August | Recruiting and off-time

  • Off time away from Campus with check-ins as necessary with the Executive Board

Compensation

  • 1099 contract position with compensation ranging from $38,266 - $42,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Job Requirements

Physical Conditions

  • Able to lift 50 pounds safely;
  • Willing to work in wet, damp, or cold conditions;
  • Capable of operating a powerboat safely.
