Job Description

Wet Pants Sailing Association (Sayville, NY) seeks applicants for a Head Instructor and Instructors (we sail Optimist, 420, Sunfish, Flying Scot, Mercury) with US Sailing Level 1 Certification or higher for the summer 2024 season, which runs July 1 - Aug 16th (plus a few days before/after).


Our fun learn-to-sail programs teach students (ages 8 through adult) with beginner to advanced skill levels to become safe independent recreational or competitive racing sailors. Good coaching and a passion for sailing is fundamental to success! Most are in the juniors program - we also do adult and multi-generational family groups 2 nights a week.

Approximately 40-55 hours / week for head instructor, 35-45 hours / week instructors. No weekend classes, all are weekday! Salary commensurate with experience. This is full-time position, classes run July 1st through August 16th. Start a few days before to get set up and a few days after to break it down. Head Instructor oversees and guides all Instructors/Coaches as they develop their teaching skills, maintaining a productive courteous team, keeping them on task.

You are an experienced, safety conscious motivator - instructing on land and water. You are a wonderful communicator and a self-starter. Swim test youth, coach at regattas, participate in occasional evening social events and informal weeknight club races. We do host a Junior Regatta through GSBYRA, a Flying Scot Regatta, and a sharing/sailing day of friendship with developmentally disabled students among other activities. You will be responsible for overseeing the readiness of our fleet, reporting maintenance needs. Overtime as needed.

A community based sailing organization since 1934, Wet Pants Sailing Association is located in Sayville on the Great South Bay - Long Island, NY's south shore. We have 2 international and 1 regional airports nearby, buses and trains, farms, vineyards, beaches, shopping and close proximity to New York City.

In addition to our General Requirements listed below:

Minimum 3 years experience teaching sailing, with references

Minimum 1 year in a supervisory/head instructor capacity, with references

*Level 1 US Sailing certificate - CURRENT (minimum)





Safe use/experience with Opti, 420, Sunfish, Mercury, Flying Scot

Safe use and experience with 14-19’ power boats

Personal racing experience with solid knowledge of weather/sailing conditions

Oversee proper maintenance and storage of boats, gear and tools

Provide strong positive leadership, creativity and demonstrate a passion for sailing

Have excellent proper knowledge of terminology, rigging, docking, troubleshooting techniques etc

Have excellent and respectful communication and instruction style

Convey feedback to students and parents in a positive, constructive manner

Self motivated to create and teach enriching land and water lessons, engaging students

Preplan min. of 8-hrs of foul-weather activities on appropriate sailing topics for different age levels

Available days and some evenings to accommodate classes offered, regattas and club events

Must be able to operate electric boat lift to lift and lower Mercurys and Flying Scots daily

Able to lift, drain and put Optis & 420’s on dolly, pull up beach or load onto stacking trailers

Strong swimmer, tolerant of sun and salt water

Conduct daily cleaning and organization of buildings, restrooms, sail shed, yard & beach

Have current US Sailing Membership

Have completed USOC Safesport Training & complete our additional sexual harassment training

Have current CPR and first aid training

Hold a minimum US Sailing Level 1 certificate valid through Aug. 31, 2024 or international equivalent (OR valid USCG Masters License with Sail Endorsement)

Head Instructor & Sailing Instructors - Youth & Adult Sailing Program

Reports To
The Head Coach position will report to the Parental Steering Committee (PSC) Chairperson, Commodore and Executive Committee.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities include instruction and education on proper and safe sailing techniques & rigging, wind and weather, maintenance of sailboats and maintaining club facilities to students. Assist Race Coach with the Advanced Race Team, Manage Junior Instructors and Student Volunteers. We host a blood drive and an adaptive sailing day for differently abled students over the summer! Our race team competes at regattas hosted at other south shore clubs.

Essential Characteristics
You are a self starter who is enthusiastic and a natural leader. We seek to bring in new families to instill a passion for sailing, so a charismatic personality is a plus. Safety and safe procedures are of paramount importance. We welcome fresh ideas and opportunities.

Sailing Instructors along with Race Coach as well as 60-120 students, including 12-24 adults

Key Responsibilities
• Instruction oversight
• Management of facility and equipment
• Communication with parents, students, members, board, PSC, instructors, visitors
• Maintain house responsibilities of Instructors
• Develop and coach youth race team for Opti, 420, Sunfish
• Create and manage youth sailing schedule including regattas
• Additional duties as determined by the PSC

Professional Requirements
• Level One Sailing Certification - minimum
• Current CPR & First Aid Certification
• Powerboat Certification - we have 2 Boston Whalers
• Must be a skilled sailor in Opti, Sunfish, 420 and Flying Scot or equivalent
• We require Safe Sport and Sexual Harassment training prior to start

Program Facilities and Access
• Modern free-standing youth sailing center storage facility with maintenance room, office and classroom, hoist & beach launch, private slips, floating dock.
• 6 @ 420’s
• 3 @ Flying Scots
• 3 @ Mercury
• 12 @ Opti’s
• 3 @ Sunfish
• 2 @ 15’ & 17’ center console motorboats with new Yamaha motors 2022 & 2023

40-55 per week. Sailing positions are hourly for a 7-week period over July and August. Weekends generally are OFF, aside from occasional races and social events. Weekday position. Lessons are held: Monday - Thursday 8-10am, 10-12pm, 1-4pm. Additionally, we do 6-8pm on M/W for adult. Fridays are only regattas with the Race Team. We encourage instructor participation in Tuesday night Sunfish races and some instructors will man motorboats during evening races.
