Job Description

I.      Position-Flexible Weekdays/Possible Weekends

Port Washington Yacht Club Ideal 18 Sailing Instructor 

The Port Washington Yacht Club maintains a fleet of five Ideal 18 sailboats for our members enjoyment. Many of our members do not have sailing experience and join the Waterfront Program to gain experience on the water including learning to sail. The instructor  of the Ideal 18 program is responsible for teaching members how to sail and command the sailboats. The Ideal 18 Sailing instructor manages all Ideal 18 sailing activities of the fleet. in coordination with the weekend instructor.

II.       Critical Skills

           The instructor must have prior keelboat sailing experience and be comfortable in instructing adults learning to sail. They need to be able to work independently and set their own schedule based upon requests for lessons from members learning to sail and required maintenance.  A passion for sailing is critical to the success of this role.

III.      Responsibilities

·        The instructor will provide instruction to members learning to sail Ideal 18 sailboats. Possibly catamarans as needed.

o   The instruction is generally provided to adult members primarily on weekends

o   The instructor will also assist our Ladies Sailing program on Wednesday evening and provide chalk talks on racing strategy

o   The instructor will ensure members have sufficient skill to sail Ideal 18’s without the Director being onboard the vessel.

o   The isntructor will ensure each member has signed the club’s waiver

§ Members usually require several lessons or prior experience to be deemed certified and allowed to skipper the Ideal 18.

§ The instructor will use his/her skill sets in determining a certification process

·        The instructor will maintain a general log of sailing lessons provided and general usage of the boats

·        The instructor tracks inventory of all equipment necessary to run the operations:

o   Informs the General Manager of any equipment issues

o   Performs maintenance and repairs (if able)

o   Performs routine cleaning and inspection of boats

o   Rig and launch boats at start of season / break down boats at end of season

·        The instructor will also:

o   Informs the General Manager of any incident and writes report

o   Meets with Committee Chairs as necessary to assist in evaluating the program and activities

o   Determines hours/sessions for each level of instruction

o   Determines program schedule and schedule sailing lessons with members (members will e-mail the instructor to schedule an appointment)

o   Oversees start-up and close down operations

IV.     Supervision

The instructor will report to the General Manager. Coordination and meeting with the Dockmaster and Waterfront Committee Chairs is also required.

V.       Compensation

The instructor’s compensation is based on experience and skill set. The target base compensation rate is $25 per hour.
