Job Description

The Portland Yacht Club located on beautiful Casco Bay in Falmouth, Maine is seeking an experienced Program Director for our Junior Sailing Program. The Portland Yacht Club’s Junior program fosters a life-long love of the sport of sailing in a safe, educational, and fun environment.

The successful candidate will lead a team of 10 instructors as well as manage program volunteers. PYC program participants progress from the ½ day pram program through optimists. The next level of sailors have the option to sail 420s, join the 420 Race team or be part of the Adventure program on a Colgate 26. The Opti and 420 Race teams compete at several local regattas with an option to race 1-2 out of state regattas including Marblehead Race Week.

The Program Director will oversee safety, curriculum and quality of our program including program equipment.

Primary tasks include:

1. Hiring a team of qualified coaches to fulfill PYC’s Junior program mission. – Level 1 certification required.

2. Trains and supervises coaches to be effective instructors and leaders of students.

3. Reviews current curricula and lesson plans and revises as necessary.

4. Designs and works with coaches to develop safety and emergency-response programs based on best practices.

5. Manages the program registration process; works with parents and coaches to determine the most appropriate placement for each participant’s sailing skills, experience, and attitudes.

6. Plans for race Team participation in Regattas

7. Meets with Club Manager weekly to discuss progress.

8. Recommends purchase of equipment to ensure PYC is offering a safe, high-quality program

Job Requirements
US Sailing Certification (Level 3 preferred)
Management and youth leadership experience
CPR First Aid Certification
Previous motor boat experience
