A BSSC Junior Sailing Assistant is responsible for assisting with the implementation of an integrated Sea and Science Program that embraces hands-on experiential learning activities in boating, sailing, and the marine sciences. This includes classes at multiple skill levels and age groups on and off the water. BSSC's summer program runs from June 7 (negotiable) to August 29 (negotiable). Junior Sailing Assistants report to the Waterfront Director and Executive Director.


Specific job responsibilities include:

Promotes a safe and fun environment.

Attends a pre-season staff orientation, commissioning, and post-season de-commissioning.

Helps to develop lesson plans to achieve curriculum objectives for classes.

Assists with maintaining records of performance and attendance for participants.

Helps with the maintenance of the Center's boats and equipment.

Works as a member of a team with Sailing Instructors, Science Instructors, Junior Science Assistants, Apprentices, and Volunteers.

Attends and participates (if possible) in BSSC Community and Family events.

BSSC is located on the Damariscotta River in beautiful and historic East Boothbay, Maine. Offering year-round experiential education in the region, we are a community, non-profit sailing, boating, and ocean sciences education center in our 9th year of operation. Located at the Ocean Point Marina, BSSC is nearby a general store and several restaurants as well as Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, US Coast Guard Boothbay Harbor, Washburn & Doughty, Nathaniel S. Wilson Sailmaker.

Job Requirements

A desirable candidate will have a working knowledge of small boat sailing skills and must be a minimum of 15 years of age by the start of the summer program. He or she will have experience and interest in working with youth while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment that aims to develop a lifelong interest in sailing, the marine sciences, and environmental stewardship.

Minimum Qualifications:
Age 15 at the start of the summer program
Sailing experience
Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification *
SafeSport Certification
National Association of State Boating Law Administrators approved “boating safety course”

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
US Sailing Level I Certification *

*BSSC will reimburse half (50%) of the Certification Fees (if applicable and only upon successful completion of the course)
