The San Diego Yacht Club is seeking qualified sailing instructors and coaches to support sailors in all aspects of our Junior Program, from learn-to-sail to advanced racing. Opportunities exist for seasonal (summer), part-time, and full-time positions.
SDYC proudly maintains one of the premier Junior Sailing Programs on the West Coast, training 300+ youth sailors during the summer and 100+ throughout the year. We support programs that range from Learn-to-Sail to advanced racing and most everything in between, including Naples Sabots, CFJ, ILCA, C420, J22, and 29er classes.
Our Summer Program begins with a staff training week, running June 2nd – 6th, followed by eight weeks of instructional time, ending on August 1st. Start dates may be flexible, but coaches must be able to commit to at least 6 weeks of the summer. Coaches typically work Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with some additional travel days to regional regattas. During the summer, we run two half day programs. Morning classes (8:30am to 12:00pm) focus on beginning sailing and introductory courses in CFJs, Sabots, C420s, and ILCAs. Afternoon sessions (1:00pm – 4:30pm) include our large racing programs, Adventure Sailing, and learn-to-race classes.
Year-round after school sailing activities run from early January to Memorial Day, and from Labor Day to mid-December. These programs also include a wide variety of sailing lessons and provide coaches with opportunities to travel to events throughout the Southern California region and flexible scheduling to support personal sailing competition, professional development, or schooling commitments. Coaching opportunities are more racing focused during the school year.
