Job Description

JUNIOR INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. This position reports to the JSP Head Instructor & JSP Senior Instructors (& to JSP Camp Director as needed)
  2. Assists Senior Instructors & Race Coach with class organization and preparation
    • Assist with daily instruction on- and off-of-the water, lectures, demonstration and skill practice
    • Assist with setting race course settings,
    • On-board sailing instruction with Beginner students
  3. Will assist with training of Junior Assistant Instructors
  4. To work within OYC, US Sailing and MA recreational camp standards & safety requirements
  5. To Learn and integrate US Sailing rules & regulations
  6. Will respectfully and effectively communicate with all staff, JSP students/parents, & OYC members.
  7. Assist with JSP related boat maintenance, rigging, gear preparation, daily inspection of equipment used
  8. Encourage students’ participation in Thursday Racing sessions when appropriate

 

Job Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The following requirements are mandatory for employment as a JSP Instructor and conform to the MA DPH 105 CMR 430.000 Minimum Standards for Recreational Camps for Children: 

  1. Must be 16 years old by June 19 and be available for all eight (8) weeks of the JSP
  2. Must have at least four years sailing/racing experience in small boats (such as prams, dinghies, multihulls or daysailing keelboats) either at the OYC or elsewhere.
  3. NEW HIRES
    1. Three work/volunteer references and three positive personal references required
      1. Reference must have name, address, phone number, length of relationship noted
    2. Candidates must have been a JSP Junior Instructor or Junior Assistant OR have equivalent experience with another sailing program(s) (provide references)
  4. REHIRES:
    1. Must have been an JSP Junior Assistant for a minimum of one season
    2. Returning staff may use prior JSP files for work history & references
    3. If OYC JSP work history is LESS than three (3) years, include other work history/references as needed
  5. Prior to the start of the Program (see employee information/required forms document):
    1. All instructors must have current American Red Cross CPR, AED and/or First Aid certifications 
    2. All instructors must have completed Concussion Training certification & PFD Fitting Online Course
    3. Recommended - US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Counselor Course certification
    4. Shall submit to applicable CORI & SORI and background checks - Positive results will allow employment
    5. Shall submit a current immunization record and current health/medical form from health care provider
    6. Shall satisfactorily complete the mandatory Instructor Orientation Program
