Junior Sailing Instructor Needed

The Sailing Instructor will be the first contact that the student has with the Sailing program. They, therefore, must be friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable of the rules, regulations, and operations of the program. Pine Beach instructors must be enthusiastic about the sport of sailing and seek to expose students to the fundamentals of sailing as well as the importance of the natural environment in which we sail. We want everyone in the program to feel welcomed and allow the children to have a safe environment where they feel happy to be a part of the sailing community.

Qualifications

1. Hold a current US Sailing Level 1 Small Boat Instructor certification at a minimum

2. Up to date certifications in or willing to obtain prior to program start date:

1. CPR & First Aid,

2. SafeSport Training

3. State Boater’s license or out of state equivalent

3. Motorboat driving experience; ability to operate a motorboat in all weather conditions.

4. Must have a passion for sailing, the environment and experience working with kids.

5. Must have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude.

6. Must possess strong problem solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.

7. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Pay Rate: hourly compensation commensurate with experience

EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Comply with all PBYC policies, procedures and guidelines including the Sailing Instructor Job Description.

• Wear a USCG approved PFD at all times while on the water.

• Ensure that sailors wear a USCG approved PFD at all times while on the water.

• Wear the engine kill switch lanyard attached to your person at all times when operating a motor boat, per USCG requirements.

• Comply with all PBYC policies and procedures related to limiting the spread of COVID-19 & the health and safety of our sailors, staff, families and members.

• Administer first aid when appropriate and immediately report any injury to the Head Instructor.

• Foster a positive learning environment, serving as a role model to the young sailors and leading by example.

Job Description Continued:

• Supervise as sailors are rigging/de-rigging boats. Sitting down on the deck or inside during this time is not permitted. You will be actively engaged with the sailors at all times.

• Show the sailors the proper methods for maintaining their equipment and conduct weekly inspections of junior sailors’ equipment.

• Provide individualized instruction and feedback to each sailor regarding their safety, seamanship, sportsmanship, knowledge of the rules, boat maintenance, strategy and tactics, and behavior.

• Refrain from all use of profanity.

• Check the club premises to make sure the sailors have picked up their gear and the docks and grounds are clean.

• Instruct sailors in the current Racing Rules of Sailing in accordance with a fleet’s skill level.

• Safely operate and maintain your assigned motor boat. Ensure the boat’s first aid kit and USCG safety equipment is accounted for and in good condition. Report any malfunctions or deficiencies to the Head Instructor immediately. Keep your assigned boat clean daily, and wash it thoroughly at the end of each week.

• Maintain your assigned radio and report any malfunctions to the Head Instructor. Return radio to assigned charging station at the end of the day

• Keep your cell phone with you at all times. However, you may only use it during Program hours for the following purposes: emergency communications, checking wind or weather via apps designed for that purpose, GPS based navigation, taking photographs of sailors for the year end awards ceremony. In particular, making personal calls, surfing the web, and sending personal text messages during Program hours are strictly prohibited.

• Posting anything about the PBYC Junior Sailing Program (including but not limited to photos, videos, text) in any social media is strictly prohibited, even if the post is made on your own personal time and on your own personal social media account.

• Social Media posts to promote and share communication to families regarding regatta and program information will be allowed on the Pine Beach Yacht Junior Sailing FaceBook Page only.

• Run races, maintain and post scores weekly through the end of the season.

• Remain on the water, or in a position permitting you to adequately supervise, until the sailors in your fleet have safely reached land. This applies to Program days and any regattas that you coach.

• As an employee of PBYC, acknowledge that during Program hours your primary responsibility is providing services as an instructor, and these duties shall not be neglected for any reason.

• Communication is key. That being said, you must be open and honest with your coworkers. You must work together as a team and be open to new things. If there are any problems please report to the head instructor.
