Job Description
JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR
The Junior Sailing Director is charged with overseeing all sailing
instruction and curriculum for the Junior Yacht Program, which runs for 9 weeks beginning in
late June. This position reports to the Sailing Director and works in collaboration with and under
the guidance of the Junior Yacht Committee.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION:
 Pre-Season work with Sailing Director and JY Committee Chairperson to prep
both program and club boats( optis,420s, sunfish, and sonars).
 Adhere to and support Devon Junior Yacht Code of Conduct
 Recruit and hire sailing staff (instructors and head Sailing instructor) during the
off-season with the Sailing Director and guidance of the JY Committee. Verify
staff Sailing/Boat Handling certifications and First Aid, CPR certifications
 Generate and maintain weekly staff schedule, lessons and clinics.
 Lead staff training and orientation before session begins on protocols, best
practices and safety with Sailing Director.
 Create Junior Yacht curriculum, including daily, weekly and seasonal goals for
junior sailors in all groups with Sailing Director and guidance of the JY
Committee.
 Lead staff daily meetings to discuss plans, assignments and logistics.
Organize weekly Junior Yacht program regattas, maintain accurate race results.
Work with Sailing Director regarding trophy selection and awarding for both
the weekly regattas and the year-end awards ceremony. Submit weekly
information for Club newsletter.
 Integrate PGJSA regatta schedule into Junior Yacht program with guidance from
Sailing Director, JY Committee Chairperson and JY Program Director
 Organize and oversee Junior Yacht PGJSA regattas (including selection of sailors,
boats, organizing transportation, logistics), manage administrative access to
official regatta website for registration and scoring, handle registrations and
computer entry.
 Coordinate and organize daily and standing private lessons with sailing staff, and
remit sailing chits on a daily basis to office for billing.
 Coordinate and communicate with JY Program Director on a daily basis
 Communicate with families regarding planning, questions and concerns through
email and phone calls.
 Coordinate sailing schedule with the rest of the Junior Yacht program in
coordination with the Junior Yacht Program Director and the Sailing Director.
 Supervise and manage instructors, Junior Yachters and Teen Sailing Group (not
sure what we are calling this yet) on and off the water.
 Instruct Junior Yachters in the proper care, handling and storage of club boats and
equipment.
 Follow all club safety rules with regard to powerboat handling and proper
safety gear.
 Oversee staff to ensure that safety boats are properly maintained, fueled and
docked securely on a daily basis. Schedule weekly detailed cleanings of
safety boats.
 Secure all sailboats, equipment and Junior Yacht Clubhouse at end of each day.
 Be available to help with weekend One design 
and Big Boat racing.
 Assign and maintain inventory of VHF radios.
 Coordinate with office pre-season ordering of staff shirts, radios, equipment &
supplies.
 
Job Requirements
At least 2 years prior experience as a Head Sailing Instructor or Junior Sailing
Director
USSailing certification with minimum of Level II, First Aid & CPR
The ability to make a full commitment for Pre, During and Post Season work.
A proven track record of managing staff and young sailors.
A personality that thrives in the company of large groups of children between the
ages of 4-16.
Outstanding leadership and communication skills
Strong moral character and demonstrate integrity
References that validate skills and characteristics necessary to serve as a positive
role model for children
A candidate for this position MUST be:
Available to work beginning in mid-June through end of August.mid September.
Available to work daily, generally between the hours of 8:30 am and 6:00 pm; hours
will be earlier/later on Regatta days and Thursday nights.
