Job Description


The Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum is looking for a mature leader with strong teaching skills to supervise the 2024 Junior Sailing Program (JSP).  

The JSP is a summer program that teaches students from 8 to 15 years old how to sail. The staff consists of 6-8 US Sailing Association certified instructors (16 years old minimum) and 7-10 volunteer Instructors-in-Training (ITs). Sessions last 2 weeks, with morning and afternoon sessions, for a total of about 250 students each summer (about 32 students per session). Lessons occur on Optimist Prams, O’pen Skiffs, and Club 420s. Most of the instructors are Program alumni.

The JSP is located in Beaufort North Carolina.

Position reports to the Friends Director of Operations, Brent Creelman.

Pay commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities will include:

·         Oversee instruction, operations, and parent interactions.

·         Ensure instructors and ITs teach the fundamentals of sailing, safety, and seamanship.

·         Manage instructors and Instructors-in-Training and engage in Team Building activities.

·         Ensure timely and proper repairs to broken or damaged equipment, appropriate repair skills are preferred.

·         Evaluate instructors and ITs, keep good records, prepare lesson plans, and ensure discipline.

·         Ensure safe conditions exist on and off the water.

 Employment will be from early June to mid-August—which includes a set-up week, nine weeks of instruction, and several days of post season clean-up.

Instruction takes place on weekdays from 8 AM - 5 PM.

Every Wednesday evening is an alumni open sail from 5 to 7:30 PM.

· Teaching ability and experience.
· Sailing and power boat knowledge and experience.
· Ability to work closely with the Junior Sailing Program Committee.
· The ideal candidate will inspire and mentor staff and motivate young students.
· The ideal candidate will direct instructors to run dynamic and purposeful sessions that include
effective instruction, land drills and exercises on the water.
· Establishing respectful and constructive relationships with students and their parents - this includes
providing insightful and constructive feedback.
· Contribute to an environment that fosters respect of young sailors, colleagues, and equipment.
· Leading by example with safety, fun and learning at the forefront.
· Basic rigging and fiberglass repair skills a plus.
· US Sailing Level I Certification or greater is required.
· Current First Aid and CPR certifications
