Job Description - Youth Sailing Manager

Background

Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) is a youth development and community sailing nonprofit founded in 2008. Through our dual mission, we develop academic success and leadership in underserved NYC youth, and provide maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public schools to teach math, science, and leadership to students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides sailing lessons and a membership program. HRCS has locations in Chelsea and Inwood.


Summary

As a key member of the Youth Development Team, the Youth Sailing Program Manager oversees the safety, quality, and educational effectiveness of multiple projects and programs within HRCS’s youth sailing programs. The Youth Sailing Manager reports to the Chelsea Youth Program Director and sits on the Safety Committee.


We seek an innovative and passionate sailor and educator to join a small, hardworking staff dedicated to supporting students through a waterfront community of donors, members, and volunteers The successful applicant will be collaborative and able to coordinate support with others across a dynamic organization. To excel in this role, you should have a background in sailing instruction and education. Public school teaching or science education is a plus. We are looking for a person with strong interpersonal skills who enjoys a team environment, and is able to lead projects independently.

Responsibilities by Program Area:

Sail Academy


Works closely with the Youth Program Director to support the sailing activities for Sail Academy, HRCS’s multi-year Youth Development Program.


  • Supports First Mate Programming including Skipper Track, Intern Training, and Youth Racing

  • Coordinates on-water logistics and scheduling, with the Volunteer Manager and Public Program Manager

  • Oversees powerboat training for students and interns in coordination with Operations Manager

  • Lesson planning and curriculum implementation for First Mates programming

  • Oversees and plans Skipper training program for students

  • Communicates regularly with parents and school representatives

  • Coordinates events (trips, visits, special events) throughout the year

  • Keeps an ongoing log of successes/challenges for program reports

  • Maintains partnerships with other sailing organizations to provide additional student experiences

  • Maintains relationship with professional networks, including: SSN, NYC STEM Network, US Sailing Reach, HRPT Education


City Sail Summer Camp

Works closely with the Head Instructor in the safety and day-to-day operation of City Sail, HRCS’s summer camp for youth ages 10-17.

  • Oversee the safety of land and water activities

  • Oversee the performance of 5-10 City Sail staff

  • Design and implement sailing and STEM curriculum

  • Interview, onboard, and train prospective instructors

  • Design and lead training for staff before the program season begins

  • Communicate with parents

  • Scholarship evaluation, scheduling, processing

  • Communicate with staff regarding incidents, programmatic changes, scheduling conflicts, etc.

  • End of season program reporting


Youth Racing

Manages the intramural high school sailing league to develop skills, teamwork, and leadership.

  • Oversee the safety of practices and races

  • Coordinates and schedules practices with schools and parents or other team representatives

  • Works with the Community Programs department to schedule events

  • Designs and implements racing curriculum during practices in the fall and spring

  • Serves as a race committee during races and practices


Youth Groups

  • Oversees long-term youth contracts with a variety of schools and organizations throughout the city with a focus on STEM education


Interdepartmental

  • Sailing skills evaluation for staff, volunteers, students (skipper checkouts) as needed

  • Event assistance - Regattas and Corporate events

  • Assistance with seasonal maintenance at boatyard as needed

  • Develops Safety Policies and Procedures

  • Helps serve as a rotating on-duty Boathouse safety officer for land and water-based programs


Required Qualifications

  • A strong background in sailing education and program development

  • 3-5 years of experience in teaching or STEM education, career preparation or youth development

  • Enthusiastic, outgoing, organized, willing to continually learn and improve

  • Familiar with database management and social media

  • Ability to attain Powerboat Instruction Certification, and US Coast Guard License, with HRCS support


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, youth development or STEM related field

  • Supervisory or managerial experience at a school, camp, community recreation center, or similar program

  • US Sailing Level 1, 2 or 3, Certified Basic Keelboat, Cruising or Bareboat Certified Instructor

  • US Sailing/US Powerboat Certified Instructor

  • Competitive sailing experience, coaching and instructing experience


Compensation

This is a full-time year-round position. Evening and weekend work as needed. Medical Health Insurance and 401(K). The anticipated salary range for this position is $48,000-$58,000. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.
