Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club (BHYC) is located in mid-coast Maine and has been celebrating sailing for nearly 125 years. The BHYC Junior Program has a long history of teaching juniors sailing and tenni, operating in its current location since 1955. In 2018 we were able to open a brand new facility to house our program. We offer classes for sailors from 6 - 18 at all levels from beginner to advanced racer, focusing on both racing and recreational sailing and seamanship for members and non members alike.
BHYC is now accepting applications for both Head 420 Coach and Head Opti Coach
BHYC Race coaches are expected to work with other program staff to manage day to day practice sessions on the water, catering their plans to the current skills of their racers. In addition to the daily on the water coaching, they will travel with the team to regattas and work with the director to organize and communicate logistics for all events with parents and sailors. In addition to their coaching responsibilities, BHYC coaches are expected to possess the needed skills, attitudes and desires to both work with younger beginner and intermediate opti sailors and perform basic equipment maintenance. BHYC coaches are expected to foster an environment of growth for sailors and junior staff alike.
BHYC sponsors a high school sailing team, and those sailors make the core of the summer 420 team, supplemented by summer residents. Some of our Opti Sailors also sail in Spring/Fall with our after school Opti Program. Race coaches must be at least level 1 certified and must possess the maturity and strength of character to represent BHYC in a positive manner at all times at home or traveling. Preference will be given to those who possess a current US sailing Level 2 or 3 certification, current driver’s license, can demonstrate a successful racing resume at the collegiate level (or equivalent), and/or can demonstrate growth of past sailors they have coached. Race coaches will be expected to regularly evaluate and communicate the growth of their sailors to parents, sailors and the director.
Our program maintains a fleet of 12 Zim 420’s, 36 Optis, 11 Tech Dinghies, 2 RS Feva's 6 Coach Boats, and a Boothbay Harbor One Design (BHOD a 21 foot club class day sailor). In addition, we share use of 2 J-22’s with Adult Sailing. Staff Housing is available across the street from the Junior Program Facility, and staff is granted use of program equipment during the season. The Summer Program runs from 6/27 - 8/19 with set up, training and orientation the week of 6/20. Instructors are generally scheduled from 830 - 430 Monday through Friday, although we are willing to discuss other arrangements including part time, or part season employment to compliment your racing schedule or other plans. In addition to a variety of opportunities to sail, overtime is available to help run races on evenings and weekends as well. Interested Candidates should send a cover letter and application to Junior Sailing Director Chris Liberti at chris.liberti@bhyc.net.
