The Youth/Adult Sailing Coach, under the direction of the Youth Sailing Director, works in the Sailing Department, providing on-the-water coaching for the various Race Teams (Laser, Optimist, C420) and Adult RS21 Program. The Sailing Coach work mainly outdoors and on the water, generally Wednesday through Friday, until dark (end of sailing), and weekends, per the practice and regatta schedule.
 

Essential Functions

  • Coach all SFYC Sailing classes and Race Teams (optimist, laser, C420) as needed in conjunction with other available coaches.
  • Coach adult RS21 classes as scheduled by the Fleet Manager (approximately 10 hours per week).
  • Drive equipment trailers to Northern California regattas in conjunction with other staff as needed.
  • Identify and assist Youth Director and Head Coach with all Club-owned boat maintenance. Keep facility clean and safe with all staff.
 
Job Requirements
Required Skills
• Ability to coach at all levels.
• Self-starter with ideas and projects.
• Ability to operate a full range of small sailboats and motorboats safely.
• Boat maintenance knowhow for dinghy and motorboat repair and rigging, including fiberglass.
• Must be able to analyze situations with regard to safety and operations and make decisions quickly and effectively.
• Trailer driving experience.
• Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure and difficult conditions, to protect the safety of sailors and equipment.
• Knowledge of water safety.

Education, Certifications and Experience Requirements
• Certified as US Sailing Instructor Level 1 or above throughout tenure in this position.
• SafeSport Certification
• CA Boaters Card
• Extensive knowledge and experience with boat transportation (trailers).
• Valid driver’s license, extensive driving experience and good driving record.
