Job Description

The Haven Beach Club is seeking instructors and coaches for seasonal employment at all levels to join our competitive racing and learn to sail programs for the summer of 2022.  Our program is divided into two class sessions per day. In the AM we hold our beginning level courses with Opti sailors ages 8 and up. Our afternoon program offerings range from intermediate and racing Sunfish to more advanced racing in Lasers, C420s.

Our program will begin with a staff training session the week of June 13th and end on August 14th, with eight weeks of coaching instruction for a total of 9 weeks paid time. We are willing to be flexible with start dates but expect coaches to be available for at least 6 weeks of the summer. Classes meet Monday- Friday, 8:00 am to Noon and 1 pm to 4:30 pm, with Interclub Island Races on Wednesday and our HBC Saturday Morning series for all members. The HBC Sailing Program has a fleet of Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers, and C420’s.  The program has students ranging in age from 8 to 16.  There is also an adult beginner’s class.

Sailing Instructors will work with the Head Sailing Directors, Sailing Chairpersons, and General Manager to understand program goals and help implement curriculum and daily lesson plans.

They will be required to supervise all levels of sailors throughout the summer and should have experience in sailing instruction and proficient sailing skills.

The ideal candidate is organized, professional; works well with youth and parents; is self-motivated, a team player, and adaptable.

The position requires instruction on and off the water in addition to the management of daily sailing program operations. 

About Us:

The Haven Beach Club (HBC) is on the south side of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, NJ, on one of the most breathtaking sunset locations over Barnegat Bay.  Founded in 1947, its rich history and traditional family focus appeal to all ages.  HBC is the only private club on the island with an inground Olympic-sized pool.  Club membership includes pool, clubhouse, and dock access with boating, swimming, and sailing offerings.

Pool facilities include an Olympic-sized pool with a pool deck, tables, chairs, umbrellas, separate bathrooms, and showers.

The pool areas are typically open Memorial Weekend through Labor Day and weekends through September.  The pool is available only on weekends in the early season until local schools are out of session in mid-June.


Job Requirements
· Work with the Sailing Directors, Sailing Instructors, Sailing Chairperson, and General Manager on placing sailors in the correct class according to ability and experience.
· To report directly to the Sailing Director and/or the Head Instructor.
· To teach sailing to individuals and groups as assigned.
· Participate in sailor/parent meet and greet prior to the season beginning.
· Answer programming calls/questions from parents.
· Communicate with sailing families throughout the season to ensure quality experiences.
· Assess equipment and make recommendations for repair and maintenance when not teaching.
· Oversees start-up and close-down operations.
· Ensure a safe working and learning environment.
· Conduct fun activities throughout the summer including rainy day plans.
· Coordinate with local regattas, interclub events, and HBC programming.
· Get out on the water to observe and assist staff and sailors.
· To track student progress and help students set and achieve personal sailing goals.
· To cheerfully accept the support of volunteers and to mentor-train volunteers.
· To motivate students to excel and grow as sailors.

Personal Qualities and Characteristics:
· Energetic and enthusiastic.
· Personal qualities should include mature decision-making, humility, flexibility, and unquestionability, integrity, a genuine love for people, and sailing.
· Punctual and organized.
· Motivator of others to excel.

Required Skills:
· Exceptional teaching, organizational and interpersonal skills.
· History of sailing. Preferably dinghy sailing.
· Able to independently trailer launch a boat.
· Handy with power tools, boat maintenance, and rigging.

Required Certifications:
· US Powerboat Safe Handling Certification
· Current First Aid/CPR Certification
· Level 1 or 2 US Small Boat Instructor Certification
