Job Description

· The URI Sailing Team is a Club Sport and falls under the Department of Campus Recreation in the Division of Student Affairs. The Head Sailing Coach reports to the Coordinator of Club Sports under the Director of Campus Recreation.

· Club Sports at URI are primarily led by students and the Head Coach is expected to work closely with the team leadership- primarily team captains and CSIC representatives.


Salary to commensurate with experience.


Primary Responsibilities:

· The Head Coach shall promote fair play and good sportsmanship at all practices and competitions.

· Properly follow and enforce safety guidelines for on-water sessions as stipulated by the U.S. Coast Guard, Towns of South Kingstown and Narragansett and the URI Sailing Facility guidelines and regulations.

· Attend select University functions as directed by the Coordinator of Club Sports

· Conduct tryouts and select sailors to form a competitive intercollegiate sailing team

· Schedule and coordinate all team related events including practice, team meetings, workouts and regatta participation.

· Organize all home events including securing graduate race management officials as specified in NEISA regulations.

· Accompany team to select regattas each weekend during the fall and spring racing seasons.

· Perform ongoing evaluations of sailors to monitor their development and determine weekly regatta assignments.

· Attend URI Sailing Team Advisory Council (STAC) meetings as required.

· Monitor the academic progress and eligibility of all student athletes.

· Recruit prospective student-athletes for URI Sailing through meetings, visitations, admissions programs, website inquiries and correspondence. Keep an ongoing and updated recruiting list to be shared with Club Sports Coordinator and SAC when appropriate. Coach is highly encouraged to attend junior clinics and regattas in the off season in a manner that attracts potential student-athletes for admission to URI.

· Coach shall work with the Dean of Admissions or their designate to track the applications of recruits and their admissions status.

· Have complete awareness and understanding of the United States Sailing Association (USSA), Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) and New England Sailing Association (NEISA) rules and regulations that includes vast knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the ICSA Procedural Rules.

· Manage and develop the team’s competitive schedule through NEISA established procedures and policies. Attend ICSA and NEISA annual scheduling meetings. Conduct all business within ICSA and NEISA for URI Sailing Team as appropriate/needed.

· Establish work out training regimen for both in-season and off-season. Conduct or coordinate two fitness sessions per week and require weekly ERG sessions in the off season

· Oversee the management of the team website and social media in cooperation with the team members delegated by the team leadership.

· Uphold sustainable and inclusive practices; work to enhance diversity, create an environment of inclusion and embrace social justice.

· Willingness to adapt to changes in a dynamic, diverse work environment as needed.

· Responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies and procedures outlined in the University Manual, Human Resources Administration Required Personnel forms, URI Student Handbook, Club Sports Resource Manual, and CISIC By-Laws.

· Office Hours:

o In Season: Be available to meet before or after practice each day, preferably by appointment, or at other mutually agreeable times. During the season the Head Coach is expected to encourage sailors to meet as needed and be available to do so in a manner that makes it easy for the student/sailor.

o Off Season: The coach is expected to be available for meetings with school administration, STAC, and students as needed during the latter part of the fall semester and beginning of the spring semester.


· Oversee team finances and dissemination of all team funds in conjunction with the Coordinator of Club Sports, The Director of Campus Recreation, the Club Sports & Intramural Council (CSIC) representatives and the Team Captains.

· Assist with the formulation of the annual Sailing Team budget in accordance with the timetable and guidelines set by the Coordinator of Club Sports and the URI Student Senate. Attend and participate in budget hearings with the Team Captains and CSIC representatives, as requested.

· In cooperation with the team leadership, Sailing Advisory Council and Coordinator of Club Sports, oversee, coordinate and assist with all fund-raising activities. Examples include but not limited to: Phone-a-thon, annual appeal, raffles, alumni newsletter, alumni regatta, dues collection, etc.

Alumni Relations and Communications:

· In cooperation with team leadership and Campus Recreation administrators ensure that team newsletters are written and distributed to the URI Sailing alumni, family and friends at a schedule to be determined by all stakeholders (administrators, URI Foundation, STAC, etc.)

· In cooperation with the team leadership, designated Alumni organizer(s), and the Coordinator of Club Sport, organize and promote and execute the Annual David Konigsberg Cup Alumni Regatta.

· Work with the Alumni Association and team leadership to maintain and update the Alumni mailing list as well as contact lists for current team members parents.

· Work with the Sailing Team Advisory Council with regard to all strategic decisions, financial outlook, coaching needs, and capital equipment acquisition.


· In cooperation with the Coordinator of Sailing Programs and team leadership schedule and direct off-season boat maintenance for Sailing Team’s FJ fleet, 420 Fleet, and coach boat(s).

· In consultation with the Coordinator of Sailing Programs, ensure that boats- sail and power are regularly maintained, cleaned and kept in good working order while in use during the competitive seasons.

· Develop and implement a preventive maintenance plan for all team equipment.

· Oversee end of each season cleanup, storage and program wrap-up. This includes but is not limited to FJ fleet, coach boats, floats, trailers, equipment and office.

· Develop an inventory list of equipment and facilities with recommendations for repairs, upgrades and capital replacement. This should be done at least once each semester.

· In the event of a weather emergency (hurricane, flood) requiring securing team equipment, the coach in coordination with the Coordinator of Sailing Programs will be responsible for coordinating efforts to ensure that all assets are protected as best as possible.

Job Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Demonstrated evidence of US Sailing Level 2 Instructor Certification
• Demonstrated substantial dinghy racing experience
• Demonstrated experience in collegiate style fleet racing and team racing
• 1-2 years of prior coaching experience at the junior, high school, or college level
• Demonstrated experience in boat repair and maintenance
• Demonstrated leadership, teaching, and organizational skills
• Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and computer skills
• Demonstrated ability to work with college students, alumni, staff, and donors
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
• Demonstrated evidence of current First Aid/AED/CPR certifications or ability to obtain within two months of employment.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends
• Willingness to travel locally, regionally, and nationally
• The successful candidate for this position will be required to complete a HireRight criminal background checks satisfactory to The University of Rhode Island prior to commencing employment.
• Demonstrated evidence of US Sailing Level 3 Coach Certification
• 3 or more years of prior coaching experience at the college level
• Experience with fundraising initiatives including but not limited to; letter campaigns, crowdfunding, and alumni events
