Job Description

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a dynamic person to help manage and deliver programs to children, youth and adults at our Sailing Center. The Assistant Manager of Sailing and Powerboat Programs is responsible for assisting the Supervisor of the Sailing Center with all facets of our sailing and powerboating programs. This is a full-time year round position that includes teaching sailing and powerboating, boat maintenance, program development and outreach. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Supervisor of the Sailing Center with sailing and powerboat program development and management.
  • Assist the Supervisor of the Sailing Center with staff training and mentoring.
  • Assist the Supervisor of the Sailing Center with daily operations.
  • Assist the Supervisor of the Sailing center with programming for under-resourced youth.
  • Assist the Supervisor of the Sailing Center with instructor recruiting, training, oversight and management
  • Teach safety, boat handling and sailing theory to children and adults in Dyer Dhow sailboats and c420s to children and adults who are beginning, intermediate or racing sailors.
  • Teach students how to safely drive powerboats.
  • Develop and follow lesson plans that include dry land and on-the-water drills and inclement weather activities.
  • Have empathy for the students and be able to adapt to their individual needs.
  • Help maintain boats and the Sailing Center
  • Provide the highest quality dynamic educational programming for school groups, scouts, summer campers, afterschool programs, and homeschool groups
  • Provide excellent customer service and excellent visitor experiences
  • Help advance department and institutional goals, adhere to mission, and serve as ambassador for Mystic Seaport Museum
Job Requirements
Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
Experience teaching sailing and powerboating
Experience mentoring staff
Ability to work effectively and enthusiastically with diverse audiences in a variety of learning environments
Must have a passion for teaching sailing, powerboating, and working with children and youth
Must have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
Must possess strong problem solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.
Ability to organize, multitask, prioritize and work under pressure
Must be a team player
Experience in youth development/youth services with proven ability to engage and motivate youth of varied backgrounds
Strong leadership and mentoring skills
Ability to engage students in a dynamic and energetic manner
Familiarity with the basics of boat repair and maintenance
Excellent customer service and communication skills
US Sailing Level 1 preferred but not required
