Job Description

 

Columbia Sailing School is seeking an Adult Instructor to provide and maintain a safe, fun, welcoming, inclusive, and educational environment for the adult sailors you are instructing at Columbia Sailing School.


We are a 501(c)3 organization housed within Columbia Yacht Club located in downtown Chicago. Every year, we welcome over 500 kids ages 5-18 and an Adult Lessons program to the shorelines of Lake Michigan for classes ranging from adventure boating to high-performance racing.


The Adult Instructor will follow the highest standards of safety while instructing your students through the various sailing courses within our 2023 summer Adult Program:

-First Sail: A ‘taster sail’ experience

-Learn to Sail: A two session, Introductory course

-US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification: A 20 hour all encompassing US Sailing curriculum based course

-Learn to Race: A seasonal course based on sailors ability (Intermediate/ Advanced)

Sailing is a lifelong sport, and the Columbia Sailing School gives students options once they have mastered the basics. We offer Clinics and Seminars on and off the water throughout the year and a chance to book one of our certified instructors for Private Lessons.

Job Requirements
Position Summary:
A successful applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills, excellent people skills, the ability to provide creative ideas for learning, extensive sailing experience, and strong Powerboat operation experience. A background in racing / race management is an asset.

Essential Qualifications:
CPR/First Aid training
US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification
US Safe Powerboat handling
US Sailing Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals
Safe Sport Certification
A minimum of two years experience instructing Keelboat sailing
Satisfactory completion of an Instructor Orientation Program
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Include but are not limited to
Ensure the safety of sailors present at Columbia Sailing School
Foster a positive learning environment
Create a fun and enjoyable experience for students
Maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students
Developing engaging and educational lesson plans
Be on time, be prepared
Wear a Kill Cord whenever operating a powerboat
Maintain your powerboat
Safely organize and secure all boats on dock
Maintain clean and safe facility
Greet members and visiting yachtsmen as they enter and leave club
Enforce all safety rules in a courteous and professional manner to your students
Keep accurate time records
Maintain and improve the quality of Columbia Sailing School

Supervison / Reporting:
Program instructors will report directly to the Adult Keelboat Coordinator. You will also follow any direction by the General Manager of Columbia Yacht Club, the On Water Director, and Assistant On Water Director.

Expected Work Hours:
Work schedule and hours depend on the assigned course you will teach. Our peak summer season runs from early May to late September.

Depending on circumstances and needs, the schedule includes some evening hours.
 
Compensation:
Compensation shall be based on experience and hours worked. You will be paid hourly according to the course time frame.
