Job Description
Overview:

Sail Sand Point is Seattle’s Community Boating Center; a non-profit 501(c)(3) incorporated in 1998. We are dedicated to making sailing and paddling accessible to everyone regardless of age, income, or ability. Sail Sand Point offers a wide range of programs, including; summer youth camps, adult classes, race teams for middle school, high school and the University of Washington, boat rentals, community events, corporate and outreach groups as well as adaptive water sports serving those with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities.

The Youth Program Director is responsible for scheduling, training, and overseeing staff hired by the Sailing Director to ensure that all summer camp staffing needs are met. In addition, the Youth Program Director is responsible for working with the Sailing Director to make sure all programs are in keeping with Sail Sand Point’s motto of ‘Safety, Fun and Learning’. They must be reliable, punctual, and comfortable managing a staff of 25-30 employees and volunteers.

Experience with sailing and watersports is valuable, however those skills can be taught. Preferred candidates will love working with people and are comfortable navigating the challenges that some groups and participants face.

They will also act as a leader and role model to our staff of interns, volunteers and instructors.

Reports to: Sailing Director

Classification: Summer F/T (40 hrs/wk, some evening and weekend work may be required)

Dates of Employment: June 1-September 1, 2023

Compensation: Hourly, $22/hr

Prerequisite Skills:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with co-workers and constituents of all backgrounds
  • Organized, systematic approach to administrative tasks
  • Passionate about enriching lives through recreational activity and environmental engagement
  • Knowledge of safe boating practices
  • Current US Sailing Level 1 Smallboat Instructor certification
  • Current US Sailing membership
  • Washington State (or other NASBLA certified) Boater’s Education Card
  • Current CPR/First-Aid, Safesport certification
  • CDC “Head’s Up” online concussion training
Job Requirements
Essential Job Functions:
• Lead staff in summer camp set up and clean up each day
• Schedule Summer Camp Instructors and Assistant Instructors in keeping with SSPs instructor to camper ratios
• Lead or assist in the instruction of summer camps as necessary
• Train and mentor instructors, and especially volunteers
• Complete performance reviews for all direct reports at the five-week mark and at the end of summer
• Ensure staff have completed all post camp paperwork and any necessary injury or damage reports
• Monitor and approve timesheets for all direct reports
