Half Moon Bay Yacht Club is now hiring Youth Sailing Instructors for Summer 2024

Half Moon Bay Yacht Club is situated on the protected waters of Pillar Point Harbor about 30 minutes south of San Francisco.  This quiet coastal harbor with beaches on 3 sides offers an ideal location for our award-winning youth sailing program. Our summer camp runs for 8 weeks each year and is open to youth from 8 – 16 years of age.  Camp hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 3:30 PM. Our fleet includes Optimists, Lasers, and FJ’s. We can offer some limited housing options for instructors who are not local to our community.  Please inquire for details.

Responsibilities for all instructor positions include but are not limited to:

  • Focus on Safety first, strictly enforcing protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with the other instructors to develop and implement class programming within the guidelines of the HMBYC Youth Sailing program.
  • Deliver beginner and intermediate sailing instruction to groups of 5 – 10 youth both on and off the water. Note there will be support from assistants and volunteers for larger groups.
  • Monitor weather conditions in the harbor and adjust plans for the day as needed.
  • Mentor junior instructors on how to teach sailing and how to work with kids.
  • Set an example to participants and fellow instructors by being mature and proactive.
  • Liaise with parents for normal camp activities as well as for problems and emergencies.
  • Manage equipment inspections and fix or report damages to dinghy fleet manager.
  • Follow HMBYC protocol for reporting incidents that resulted in damage to campers or boats.
  • Be a leader in fostering an inclusive environment where youth, volunteers and staff are physically and emotionally safe.


Job Requirements
• Current US Sailing Instructor Level 1, which includes CPR/First Aid, SafeSport, and Coaching Fundamentals
• Current US Sailing Safe Power Boat certification or equivalent.
• State of CA Boater Card (Free, online application)
• Available to work a minimum of 6 weeks during our 8-week Summer Camp Program
• Prior experience instructing youth sailors desired but not required if certification requirements are met.
