Job Description 

Newport Harbor Yacht Club is seeking a passionate, talented, organized, and motivated Head Coach to lead our Junior Program. 

 

About NHYC 

We proudly maintain one of the largest Junior Sailing Programs on the West Coast. We have a beautiful clubhouse, supportive Flag officers, active sailing parents, and eager sailors. Our Sailing Program consists of C420s, CFJs, and Naples Sabots with sailors ages 6 and up. We are looking to incorporate Optimists and ILCAs into the future of our program. 

 

Job Tasks/Duties

1. Organize Fall, Winter, and Spring Programs alongside the Sailing Director

2. Develop and maintain the sailing calendar 

3. Develop class lists, emergency contact information, record keeping, medical and liability forms

4. Produce the yearly Parent Manual and Instructor Manual 

5. Assist with recruitment of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer coaches

6. Oversee Summer Program with 160 sailors and 20 coaches

7. Organize regattas, trailer assignments, towing, coaching, and accommodations for all sailing classes

8. Order and gather all supplies needed for the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Programs

9. Maintain equipment: radios, marks, dollies, club CFJs, club 420s

10. Assist committee volunteers in the coordination of Summer Program Parent Orientation, Trophy Dinner, Kick-Off Dinner, and all other events

11. Prepare and assist with instructor orientation

12. Coach all classes in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Program classes

13. Attend and help run Junior Board Meetings

14. Attend the Non-Calm Advisory Committee meetings on a monthly basis

15. Travel is expected throughout the year

16. Document billing for Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Program

17. Handle disciplinary issued based on policy in the employee handbook

Job Requirements

• A valid US Sailing Level 1, 2, or 3 Instructor Certification • CPR/First Aid certification • Current Safe Boating Certificate (CA Boaters Card) • Current Safe Sport Certification • Strong References to character and sailing and coaching experience/ability.

-Maintain a professional, fun, and safe class at all times

-Ability to coach all levels of sailing, with high proficiency in advanced junior sailing expected

-Good communication skills with all parents, sailors, members, and club leadership

-Professional and approachable attitude

-Positively work alongside other staff, Sailing Director, and CITs (coaches in training)

-Instill a passion for sailing and racing into the sailors -Be hard working, organized, and prepared
