Job Description

Sarasota Youth Sailing is seeking an experienced and well-rounded Optimist Race Team Coach. Our racing teams run from mid-August through late-May. Schedule typically includes full day practices on Saturdays plus one additional after school session per week. Sailors typically attend an average of one regatta per month during the season.

Candidates will have a proven ability to develop Opti RWB sailors just moving up from Green Fleet all the way through to the USODA Team Trials. US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Certification is required, a Level 3 Race Coach is preferred. Our ideal candidate will also have boatwright, workshop, race management, and personal one-design sailing campaign experience. Our coaches work with, motivate, and lead our sailors and parents through the logistical challenges of a regatta travel season in addition to developing on-the-water racing skills. We operate in a collegial and team oriented work environment.

This is a part-time coaching position meeting an average of two to three days per week in Sarasota, FL. We travel to regattas throughout the state and occasionally beyond. We will assist a seasoned RWB Coach with supplemental professional sailing skills in securing additional work hours to complement their coaching schedule. Skills in demand locally include teaching adult learn sail classes, sailmaking, rigging, composite materials repair, and outboard engine maintenance.

Compensation is competitive. Please send a brief cover letter and coaching resume to SYS Sailing Director Kevin Dooley at syssailingdirector@gmail.com.
