Job Summary

The Point O’Woods Yacht Squadron is looking for a mature sailor with fiberglass, rigging, and mechanical skills to be the Director of Fleet Management. This position includes housing and is subject to a background check and reference checks.

About the Yacht Club

Point O’Woods is a private summer community of 130 homes located on Fire Island, which is in between New York’s Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Our Yacht Squadron operates a sailing program that provides sailing lessons for children and adults, and which owns and maintains a fleet of forty sailboats and powerboats.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Preparing the POWYS fleet - ten 420s, seven Sunfish, fourteen Optimists, 3 O’Pen Bics, 8 paddleboards, one RS Quest, and one JY 15 - for use before the program begins in mid-June.

  • Maintaining the fleet of sailboats during the season.

  • Maintaining the club’s powerboats, including fueling, and minor mechanical and engine repairs.

  • Management of the YC’s sail shed and tool shed for maximum efficiency.

  • Timing: this is a 13 week position, from June 12 through September 8th

  • Full-time work on-site preparing the fleet during May and June.

  • Decommissioning of the fleet during late August and September.

  • Preparation and decommissioning work may involve supervision of other staff members to assist with the work.

  • Keeping inventory of the race-readiness and serviceability of the fleet.

  • Minor repairs to sails

  • Ordering and maintaining an inventory of parts.

  • Directing staff members to help with simple repairs.

  • Maintenance of yacht club facility.

  • Possible Instruction for Adult Sailing

  • Assisting the Director of Sailing with Race Management & Safety on the Water

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be a capable sailor and boat handler.

  • Must have extensive experience and demonstrated proficiency repairing and maintaining small sailing and racing boats.

  • Must have experience driving a single engine motorboat.

  • Experienced in boat repair with fiberglass, epoxy, paint and gelcoat.

  • Solid interpersonal communication skills.

  • MS Excel and Word experience in writing and keeping records.
